The death of George Floyd highlighted issues around policing in the U.S., but a year later, activists are still demanding change as police departments across the country try to repair relationships with their communities. Executive Director of the Police Executive Research Forum, Dr. Chuck Wexler, and two-time former police chief, Dr. Cedric Alexander, join News NOW to discuss how the Derek Chauvin trial impacted calls for more police training and whether the federal government should play a role in police reform.

36 thoughts on “The Effect Of Derek Chauvin’s Conviction On Policing”
  1. These two are so disconnected from the streets of policing it’s ridiculous! They are what’s wrong with law enforcement! They are “expert politicians”! Ask rank and file officers what changes need to be done not some paper pusher that hasn’t either ever done the job or it’s been so long they’ve forgotten how to do the job!

  2. First, Chauvin did not get a fair trial.
    Second, Chauvin followed department standards.
Third, Floyd died from a drug overdose.

  3. Let’s ask George Floyd if Derek Chauvin should get out on probation. Oh wait, we can’t! Let’s ask George’s family. Let’s ask the jury. Let’s ask millions of people, from every nation, who witnessed this murder with their own eyes. I bet the answer would be unanimous!

  4. The whole George Floyd death is fake. The video was an act. When will people learn to not be so DUMB. Did 2020 not teach you anything? The media are our enemies. The sooner you pearn, the sooner they fall.

  5. George was and always will be a crook. Not a martyr. This trial was not “fair” and his family is no better than he after all this bs

  6. Person one: OMG, can you believe all the people that were standing around the court house during the trial.
Person two: No one was allowed in the court room and trials are public so they had screens for people to watch. Is that a big deal?
Person one: Oh, I didn't know that. I thought they were just BLM protesters trying to intimidate the jurors.
Person two: Why would you think that ONLY BLM was there watching?
Person one: Because that's what the media was reporting.
Person two: Which stations? Local or national?
Person one: I don't know. I just read it somewhere. Maybe it was someone commenting on a YouTube video.
Person two: You know what they say about believing everything or anything that is on the internet.

  7. My dad was cop 4 30yrs. Now he can't stand them cuz of how much things have changed (sadly mostly bad). When he worked they were a huge part of the community. He used more words than force. Unless needed.

  8. Ok the Chauvin trial was a travesty, witnesses threatened, media manipulation, jurors intimidated, evidence wantonly ignored, however Floyd was experiencing severe fentenyl overdose which causes the victim to suffocate I've seen it happen,Floyd couldn't breath when first encountered he should have been examined from a medical standpoint at that time, the premise that police are so eager to make arrests for promotions, bonuses ,attention etc is a problem in police culture,or sub culture,Chauvin will pay with his life for this, also crowds gathering around police scenes and taunting police causes police to be over whelmed and less able to do there jobs, those cops were wrong but most likely Floyd would have died anyway ,he was overdosing

  9. I bet the majority of people have never even watched the actual RAW footage… Floyd was so high on drugs, foaming from the mouth and acting like a little child… Chauvin should be free but the insane BLM cult would murder him, the judges, and the jury.

  10. I cry everytime I watch the arrest of floyd… this is why we make robots to be police officers. At least a robot has a program with compassion feature on them.. when u have humans involved it ain't a fair fight… too bad in the future the robots would turn on us too..

  11. D. Chauvin
    Chauvin-ism
    chau·vin·ist

    /ˈSHōvənəst/

    noun

a person displaying aggressive or exaggerated patriotism.

    adjective

showing or relating to excessive or prejudiced loyalty or support for a particular group or cause.

    "a chauvinist slur"

  12. Extremism in the police and military ranks maybe why US troops are still stationed in Germany?

Are they writing travel logs? Learning to be Nazis? Elvis was stationed there 60 years ago.

How much has the US spent on the 76 years extremist training holiday since GI Blues?

Let's hope the George Floyd Justice and Policing Act is followed through.

  13. Chauvin, who is being held in solitary confinement at a Minnesota prison, is scheduled to be sentenced June 25. Although a jury found Chauvin guilty on all three charges he was facing, Minnesota law dictates he will face sentencing only on the most serious charge: second-degree murder.

  14. Are you kidding me . are you kidding me . you said you hate black people .I don't blame you I will hide my 😈👀 to my advice is that you open 📖 that hate pray that you can get all that evil 🙈 out of heart before you meet your maker . believe me if you don't it will eat you from the inside 💠 God 🙏 bless you and I will pray for you . now you have a blessing day

  15. I get so concerned and exasperated when discussion keeps Deflecting Consequences and Punishment for the Police. Cultural Sensitivity Training, Protocols, De-escalation are all very well and Good. However, these strategies still arent leading the the Kind of Accountability most Afro Americans are demanding. When a cop cold bloodedly murders a (unarmed / non resisting ) citizen, tries to cover up the misdeed and evidence, and when the Courts are still Defending the Cop in the face of Testimony / evidence, what are we going to do…?
Why is still so hard to bring a cop to Justice with Consequences, why is so hard to terminate them, to strip them of their powers and benefits, to see that they face Jail Time …?
We keep talking around the solutions and doing the same thing over, and over and over. Sigh !
