It is about money. Everything else is BS. can't blame her though.
Athletes should go for the bag, regardless of the nation they compete for. If their nation can’t match what another offers, that’s on them.Good on Eileen and any other athlete who makes it about themselves and not the politics.
Come on. Eileen Gu now has a networth of tens of millions dollars. Can the US give her that? Plus these are just games and let's not make this political.
ABC doing its best here again, race card!! Why don’t ya focus on train more African American athletes for winter Olympic, where is the “diversity†at?
Eileen! You are American. Compete for Team USA!
“Living my best life†will be the most iconic cognitive dissonant, naive and arrogant quote of this generation. Pathetic!
Gu makes over $40mm in China and is a celebrity. If competed for US, at best she’ll be on a cereal box. What a tough choice!
China is having their own Holocaust right now. FYI. It’s a genocide.
Now's the time to choose. It's not some old fashioned notion.Nationalism has always existed. All I have to say is learn the history of nations beforehand.China has blood on its hands just as much if not more than the
North America is a colonized continent with barely 500 years history. Americans do not understand nor appreciate heritage. Its like a spoiled child who thinks he is better than everyone else and deserves everything.
Want to inspire girls… then don’t take all the money or donate it.
Dont give Gu any recognition in the US, problem solved
"You can download VPN for free"… That about sums up Gu's intelligence. 😅
A lot of criticism about China’s Human Rights Record, U.S. should look at its own record before throwing stones.
So according to these NBC commentators, what should they tell to the millions of Chinese born and raised engineers and scientists that are serving in America? By their logic, they are all traitors to China and they should only serve where they were born and raised. The double standard stinks.
US: " Go back to China you Asian "
Asian : " Ok "
US: " No, not like that"

If China is committing genocide against Uyghurs, then by the same standard, the US is committing ethnic persecution of Blacks and Asians. And Western media is complicit. You don't see any Western attention on how racist and lopsided their politics and media is.
I can be bought for millions of dollars and I pledge my loyalty to mighty dollar as long as I can continue to live in US. When the Olympic over, Eileen Gu will live in US not China very comfortably with her Chinese millions.
hmm this was a non issue during the 80's and 90's when the USA was "poaching" athletes from other countries. Now because USA athletes are choosing to represent the countries of their birth or their parents' birth, its an issue. LOL.
What I don't understand, regarding Summer Olympic athletes especially track athletes. So many foreign students take advantage of all the elite track coaching they receive in U.S. universities and track clubs, both track and field, to return to their country of birth, representing those countries, kicking U.S. butt, men and women. Yet nothing is mentioned about that, I know it doesn't address dual citizenship, but these foreign competitors would never receive that type of training or resources in their birth countries, beating American athletes consistently. Americans are so giving.
P.S. Includes swimming.
Did she really comment “get a vpn, it’s free?†LoL. Yes, recommend chinese people to do something ILLEGAL in china.
You train in America with American resources and opportunities, you represent America in the Olympics. Period.
Maybe oversimplified the nationality issues, but solely for the benefits of common citizens, politician's ill-motivation could be criminal.
I don’t understand why china is a US adversary? The US press & politics in regards to China is a stretch & is designed to (obviously) for US consumption. The lives of 99% of China’s population is getting better every year. And China is a fragile place. Every day there is not anarchy, it’s a miracle. They have to be tough. It’s not like the US where the country can survive a president like Trump. Law & order first.
There are many people born in other countries end up representing USA in the Olympic games. Now, a US-born athlete decides to represent another country. I don't get what the issue it.
Shameless
Have people become so petty and hateful that they have to create controversy when there is none?
Eileen worked and trained hard to become one of the best at what she does. Doesn’t sound like her father was present while she grew up because it’s not talked about, but her mother sacrificed and did all she could to support Eileen’s dream. So isn’t it heartwarming that she honors her mom, her mom’s heritage which is also a big part of hers? She’s a grateful daughter. It has nothing to do with being un-American.
I say reap the rewards from the country you're competing for/representing. I would say GU shouldn't get any U.S. talk show $$…she should go on China's Late Night talk shows. She's an incredible athlete!!! maybe in the next winter olympics…she'll rep the U.S, since she feels she's both, that'd would be cool.
