11. Ukraine's situation sort of reminds of what was happening in Congo in the early 1960s, from what I've read. Of course, the underlying circumstances afflicting Congo back then were different from those now at play in Ukraine, but some parallels can be drawn.

    In the resource-rich Congo, various competing European and U.S. interests, with the Soviet's brought into the mix, used Congo as the staging ground for confronting one another. This devastated Congo, when power struggles between 'western' powers (Belgium & U.S.) and the Soviet-backed Patrice Lumumba were translated into power struggles between competing local proxies (E.g. CIA-backed Mobutu) of European & U.S. imperial powers. Lumumba was ultimately executed by the Belgians, while the Congolese people paid the heaviest price.

    Now in Ukraine, the power struggles are chiefly between Russia and NATO, using Ukraine as the staging ground for their battles, with Ukraine government in the mix, trying to stay viable. In Ukraine, unlike Congo—where strife was brought about by competition over resources, "security" concerns of the confronting parties had been used as the pretext for conflict. However, like Congo, Ukraine is the one being devestated by war, while the Ukrainians pay the heaviest price. In both the Congo conflicts and the Ukrainian conflicts, secessionists played a major part in sparking violence and complicating the conflicts, which could be broken down to proxy wars between the imperial powers (e.g. the 'west'-backed local leadership versus Russian-backed secessionists) and battles between invaders and local powers (e.g. invading forces versus local leadership).
