New bodycam shows cop’s confrontation with college student

1. Cant ask for ID, but can ask for Proof of Vaccination. Makes sense.

7. 👮‍♂️🚔🗑 The story forgot an important fact… After the cops confirmed he live there, the original cop continued to demand to have more of this man’s information like date of birth. So the cop says he wants to confirm that he really lives there, but once the property manager confirms that then he doesn’t immediately pack up and leave. It’s very possible the reason that the cop didn’t immediately leave was because the cop’s heels were already dug in on wanting to interrogate this man. The man did give the cop his ID but the address wasn’t on his ID.

   But to the cop’s credit, he didn’t fight with the man so he resisted using any force against him. So that’s very good that the cop did that. But I think best practice would be for the cop to have put up his gun once he had so much additional back up. If the guy was holding a knife, that would be one thing. But he was holding a flimsy pole with multiple other cops around.

   I don’t know that this cop was acting on racial bias or anything like that, it’s just how cops are. When they see you doing anything they’re suspicious of, they believe they have a right to get your ID and question you. There’s definitely some good that comes out of that, because the more contact police have with people the more likely they are to catch people with outstanding warrants. But it’s also not a great feeling for law abiding citizens to be detained and bothered by police. Racial bias may have played a role but there’s no way to tell in the situation.

   I did think the cop’s reason for stopping him was flimsy. The cop said he saw him with the tool banging on the ground so he went to investigate, but once he saw that the guy was actually picking up trash he should’ve just kept on moving. This is how police are, they believe they have a right to detain people for basically nothing. He claims he was detaining him from trespass, but he’s picking up trash.

21. worryingly – an official police report said the man further aroused suspicion by looking at his dwelling when pointing at it to say where he lived (as if not knowing it and looking to read the address off the sign on the wall) – think about that and what you do in that situation – even if you are right outside your house and someone asks you where you live you'd point at the house yet still look at it too? right? a weird thing to do of course (no real reason to look at it and point too) but everyone does it – therefore alarming that police find it a suspicious thing outright to do.
