Must hear from DEB HAALAND – the new secretary of the interior !!!!!! ASAP !!!!! Restructure BLM …
We need more reports on the wild horse round ups , BLM actions for birth control and proof equines are not being sold for slaughter.
My Suggestion & My Advice for the all of the people in the whole region in America :
Please .. Let's try to use a principle, concept, system, and a pattern of the environmentally friendly every day !
If you think wild horses are a endangered species, or ever will be… your a complete idiot
.†. One out of every 10 acres of wildlife habitat in the United States is managed by the BLM National System of Public lands – approximately 245 million acres (380,000 square miles) in 23 states in addition to county and state multiple-use habitat designations and WILDLIFE preserves.
A plethora of quantifiable public landscapes are available for relocation/rewilding of Historic & Cultural Wild horse herds, and their habitat. Subsequently Federal Aid for Wildlife Restoration via the Pittman-Robertson Act was passed in 1937. Revenues generated from these excise taxes are apportioned to state wildlife agencies for their conservation efforts, includes non game species. https://www.animallaw.info/statute/us-funding-state-pittman-roberson-act-chapter-5b-wildlife-restoration#669a (8) Most succinctly on the issue of management in her MEMORANDUM OPINION ROSEMARY M. COLLYER, District Judge stated:
“BLM's authority to “manage†wild free-roaming horses and burros is expressly made subject to “the provisions of this chapter[,]†16 U.S.C. § 1333(a), including the provision that “[i]t is the policy of Congress that wild free-roaming horses and burros shall be protected from capture….†Id.§ 1331. It would be anomalous to infer that by authorizing the custodian of the wild free-roaming horses and burros to “manage†them, Congress intended to permit the animals' custodian to subvert the primary policy of the statute by capturing and removing from the wild the very animals that Congress sought to protect from being captured and removed from the wild. It is difficult to think of a “management activity†that is farther from a “minimal feasible level†than removal. “
By operation of law, Conservation Units of wild equis herds should have the same ESA available habitats for relocation while designating Herd Management Areas as (ACEChttps://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Area_of_Critical_Environmental_Concern. Habitat Modification and the Endangered Species Act: Land also may be acquired under section 5 of the ESA to prevent "modification of land that is not yet but may in the future become habitat for an endangered or threatened species." (case law: Sweet Home Chapter) CRS Report: 95-778
Conservation units are evolutionarily significant units (ESUs) which are granted legal ESA protection, codified in the 1991 Administration by Robin S. Waples , defining it as a population unit that, first, "[i]s substantially reproductively isolated from other conspecific population units," and, second, "[r]epresents an important component in the evolutionary legacy of the species."" Though the biological literature has elaborated the ESU into several related concepts, Waples's 1991 definition has remained in force at NMFS National Marine Fisheries Service. Genetic data are not, however, a prerequisite for ESU identification. If direct observation or geographic separation indicates reproductive isolation and evolutionary distinctiveness, for example, the agency can designate an ESU with no genetic data at all. https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC4185076/
Animal abuse. How many killed this roundup? What is it a rancher pays to rent BLM land. $5.32 per cow calf?
An omission of very important facts is not journalism, it's spin and propaganda. This piece of drivel is so filled with factual holes. A perfect gift to the cattle ranchers who are the actual cause of the destruction of the environment in the west with their tens of millions of heads of cattle, and due to their incredibly powerful lobby in DC, are the ones insisting on the removal to near extinction levels of wild horses. BTW, wild horses have been removed from over 85% of public lands. Hardly a severe threat now. This is nothing less than a hit piece on wild horses. Shameful that ABC would sign off on this propaganda. OH, if you actually want to know the facts on how bad the ranching lobby is for wildlife and the environment in the west, look into how many millions of wild animals have been killed since 2000 and how they want to hunt and exterminate the last remaining free buffalo herd living in Yellowstone. Their mindset is that public lands are their lands. No one else's. But I doubt the "reporter" of this hit piece on wild horses will bother with facts.
Bureau of Land Management has their head so far up their own ASS they'll never see daylight. Hire me on as your director and I promise you the solution of trap and release goes into effect. Stop waiting tax payer money BLM!
Wildlife Protection Management (wildlifepm.com) is working on a remotely administered wild horse birth control system.
I would like to have seen more homework on the wild horse issue, and less stenography, from Ginger, whom I generally enjoy and respect. Very disappointing and shallow treatment.
Sterilization and release would seem to be the answer. Is it not?
Thank you Ginger Zee for this report!
So many people are unaware of the situation with wild horses and burros, and now hopefully more folks will do some of their own research and see what a mess it’s become.
Fertility treatments are a viable solution that I hope the BLM does in fact utilize, however I don’t believe they will without constant pressure from citizens who want to see wild horses on the range.
So again thank you for raising awareness and giving such a wonderful, informative report.
I DO UNDERSTAND BOTH SIDES… you have the land and the native plants. But remember these horses have been there longer then we have . we've been tearing down desert landscape for new suburbs. I have also seen AZ salt river horses, that are starving, it is sad. So we have to be able to help nature not harm. Be able to understand the managers of the lands, actually get the status of what is the nature of the footprint from the WILD HORSES. We will need to also make sure that these horses are also preserved for future families to look at those horses for the next GEN>.. we can figure something out… I know that special ed programs that offer Pet Therapy do not have enough horses due to cost to allow all the kids to interact with the horses maybe these are programs that we can look into…
ANOTHER BLM GROUP THAT NEEDS 2 GO BYE BYE!!!..LEAVE THE WILD HORSES ALONE YOU ASSHOLES..HOW WOULD YOU LIKE 2 BE TAKEN AWAY FROM YOUR FAMILY & NEVER SEE THEM AGAIN..THATS WHAT YOU R DOING 2 THESE BEAUTIFUL HORSES!!!..THANK GOD THAT SOME HORSE RESCUES HAVE SAVED THEM & BROUGHT SOME FAMILIES BACK TOGETHER..ITS SAD 2 SEE LITTLE BABIES GET LOST IN THE CHASING OF THEM OR SOME EVEN END UP KILLED..MAKES ME SO DAMN MAD..IF I HAD ALOT OF MONEY ID PUT A END 2 YOUR SORRY ASS BLM!!!!!!!!
Oh so they are treating the horses like they treated the indigenous peoples
Sold for meat in Mexico
Other options included birth control for mares, too expensive,SMH it was way less expensive than 23k.
To be fair, aren’t these mustangs and burros considered invasive species?
President Trump is aware and complicit in the the inhumane and cruel roundups and treatment after roundups. I would hate to see a democrat president at this time but this one issue has me uncertain of how I will vote in the upcoming election.
Wow, the BLM is PAYING people (essentially not really) to adopt horses and burros. We need a few donkeys in my pasture to protect the baby lambs and sheep in general. Only problem is I don't live in the midwest… I'll have to pay full price for something around me… 🙁
These horses are not kept in holding pens. They are shipped to China and Japan for slaughter. They are first blinded then killed. Humane I think not. The wild horses heal the land and the ecosystems they live in. The cattle decimate the land and the poison the water supply with urine abd fecal matter. William Pendley is being paid off by the ranchers to kill off these equine beings.
Not true! Its all about politics! Yes the BLM are not protecting the mustangs as the ranchers want the land for their cattle. The BLM wants to use OUR federal land for their own endeavors. They do not have the right to imprison these mustangs and burrios in holding pens where many die; miserable conditions. They are then sent to slaughter. Adoptions are rare. Please call your representatives and make your voice heard.
Take a close look at all those mustangs. Do you see a skinny one? A sick one? They're fit and healthy, and natural selection takes care of their populations. The BLM's motives are B.S. Cattle barons rule.
