Generation LatinX: An NBC News NOW Special Hosted By Morgan Radford

1. The problem with 'Latin-X' is the same problem with 'Hispanic" and 'Brown'. They are fictitious ethnic groups that don't exist. Some Americans keep trying to invent new social constructs that didn't exist before, to divide a segment of the population away from the 'mainstream'.

   The term Hispanic didn't exist until the Richard Nixon administration and did not gain wide use till the 1990's. It is a huge umbrella term for over 30 nationalities and hundreds of different ethnic groups and sub-cultures.

   Coinciding with 'Latin-X', the media is frequently using the term 'Brown' today as well. Again another new social construct created. Ariana Grande and Kim Kardashian are also brown but the media plays color blind with certain ethnic groups because they are accepted into the social construct of the 'mainstream'.

   Anyway, a good article from NPR is posted somewhere about a brother and sister from Spain moving to L.A. They were immediately categorized into separate races of people; as the sister was labeled 'White" and the brother "Hispanic" because of their appearance.
   Just like Sicilian and Armenian families, Mexican, Spanish and South American families may have siblings with different skin shades. Just like Italian and Armenian families, the siblings within Mexican, Spanish and South American families don't consider themselves a separate race of people if they have different skin tones.

   Also social classism and wealth comes into play when defining who is a "Hispanic". As there was absolutely no mention by the media about 4 of the last 7 Academy Award winners for Best Director being from Mexico or celebrated as some 'minority triumph'. Somebody mentioned Guillermo Del Toro 'having a fair complexion that's why', yada yada…but the other two winners Alfonso Cuaron and Alejandro Gonzales Inarritu look exactly like the vast majority of us Mexican-Americans; who are also the overwhelming vast majority of the 'Latino's in the USA. ('Latino" is OK to use because it's only a geographic label for Latin-American.) Another reasoning from the American media was that the Mexican directors were all from wealthy backgrounds thus not minorities. So ethnic groups based on money or lack there of are now being created in the United States.

   LatinX is just another fabricated social construct when just using the word 'Latin' without the 'o' at the end, or to be more accurate 'Latin-American' is much more sufficient and honest.

5. Remember the last time a bunch of american people made up a term to refer to a whole race that said race found offensive and annoying? Now they're so deathly afraid of said word they don't dare utter it.
