   Punitive sanctions tend to encourage defiance and retaliation. Reforms made by a country must be perceived as self-generated, not as capitulation. Policy makers need to understand that adapting policy to human-nature is just as important as the numbers. Perhaps even more so.

   Any policy must also be fair and consistent. China, North Korea, Saudi Arabia, etc. must be treated the same. Even democratic countries need to hold each other accountable for human rights abuses and support of bad regimes. The US invasions of Afghanistan and Iraq based on lies, is probably a large part of what emboldened Russia.

   Think positive – Unlike punitive sanctions, incentive based economic pressure would not hurt consumers, but in fact would have the added benefit of increasing worker power and the standard of living of people everywhere. Plus, the eventual savings in military spending and market disruptions due to conflict, would more than offset any temporary negative effects.

   The most important thing to understand is this: the world-wide market race-to-the-bottom, in which markets seek the lowest price, regardless of human rights, is THE PRIMARY reason that oppression and poverty still exist. This crisis shows that free people cannot be half-assed any more. Nothing will really change until oppression and dictatorship are no longer economically viable.
