28. We ask too much of the police, and put them in too many situations they are not prepared or trained for. Police should not be called out for someone who’s just having a mental health crisis. We have social workers who are better trained for that. They should not be called out for someone who’s just overdosing or substance impaired, we have health workers who are trained for that. We should not be calling them out just because someone is homeless, there are homeless social workers who are trained for that. If those situations involve violence, then yes the police should be involved. But there’s no need to send armed police officers to non-violent, non-criminal situations. Send the social workers trained to deal with that, fund those departments, and save the police for the elements they’re really trained for. That will cut back on so much violence and brutality, and save money overall, because social workers and social institutions cost a LOT less than police officers, weapons, and jail cells.

If you shoot someone, you get investigated by an independent prosecutor, who presents their case to an independent jury. Be consistent, be transparent. If you’re fair about it, the protests will stop. But the problem is that police think that they should never be held accountable, and they are willing to brutalize people in order to quiet their protests for accountability. That should scare EVERYONE, not just People of Color.
