NBC News’ Jacob Ward reports on the fallout from Marin County, California, where a collection of cities is seeking the end of a makeshift floating community and destroying dozens of boats. Clarification: A previous version of this story emphasized one city in our banner and headline, instead of a collection of cities and the county. The story has also been updated to reflect that the cities are currently acting under agreements with a state conservation commission.

  1. It's private property. Hopefully you pay for the property damages you ensued on US citizens. California is disgusting in its bs behavior

  2. Keep telling yourself that so you can sleep at night: we’re making it safer…….

  3. How about raising taxes in Sausalito and pay for boat engine repair, etc. That would be a nice thing to do and probably cheaper than enforcement.

    Oh, yeah, I forgot…millionaires are a$$holes.

  4. 3:04 your ramshackle home wont potentially come unmoored because of neglected lines and cause potentially millions of dollars in damage depending on where the weather takes it…

  5. Funny how we don't hear any Hollywood people, and I use that term lightly, speaking up for the total disaster in Afghanistan. These are the same ones, like CNN and MSNBC who are betraying all Americans. Beware when the mega protest start showing up outside your studios, keep lying and take your chances!!!

  6. I guess this is done because if a storm blows the boat of someone else into the ones that are docked and the harbor patrol duty is to prevent that due to them charging rent space cost, there is legal liability to the dock owners and City?

  7. Captain Havel has one of the most difficult jobs ever, having to destroy these death traps that people are living on. I do sympathize with these displaced people, but there’s no free ride, folks, either on the Bay or under an overpass. You’ll have get a job and a place to live like the rest of us, that’s just reality.

  8. Living afloat represents a way of life that the government can't control or tax. Governments don't like that. Yeah. And we can't have some johnny come lately nuvo riche person saying that my crusty old trawler anchored in the bay is spoiling one person's view!!!

  9. “Considering then their home,” it IS their home—they have no where else to go

  10. The woman supervisor said..If they make their boats sea worthy they can stay….." For another few years "….then they make it completely illegal …the world has changed there was a time not many wanted to live near or on the ocean believe it or not. Land was cheap…rent was nearly free…want to anchor your boat out in the harbor ? Tie a chain around a old engine and drop it in the water and tie up to it…thats your spot…free…no rent…no rules…The rich first put the local fishermen out of work …then the rules started more and more and more then rent started to go up and up and up it goes…way of the world out with the poor in with the rich…you watch the rich will only be there on maybe the 4 th of July and AB&B it the rest of the time with only tourist passing thru for a room and a meal at sky high prices…another Disneyland town is born…Avila Beach , Morro Bay , Cayucos , on and on and on …..
