It's fairly well known in the publishing industry that best-selling authors like James Patterson, Danielle Steele, Nora Roberts, and Clive Cussler are more like ''brands'' that sell very well so they have ghostwriters under them who do the bulk of the writing (sometimes credited, sometimes not). The listed author may develop the story outlines/concepts, supervise, write part of the books, and do some of the editing but they aren't really the primary writer. Even Stephen King does this most likely.

Patterson admits to not writing these novels. He creates an outline with a secondary author writing the actual novel. Why do you think there is a coauthor?
