Yes, today's "protests" are different. People on both sides of the aisle have been so turned off by them that no one is watching. Even when the country was locked down during the pandemic, no one was watching, because they were tired of being preached to by a bunch of multi-millionaire crybabies. The difference between then and now is that the athletes "protesting" today have no audience. Correction: There is one more difference. Today's protests in sports are based on a bunch of lies and on the arrogance of the "protesters."
Politics has no business in sports that is why all your professional sports that are being broadcast has their ratings in the tank.
