I work in construction, using the g note 2 with the otterbox defender wrapped around it.
that highly depends on the model of your cellphone, it can vary from only pressing a button while your phone is connected to your pc, to having to use command lines (where you can actually mess your device). However, it is usually pretty simple, go to xda-developers and look for your device, probably you will find it there, along with tutorials on how to root it, or even recover it in case you mess something up 🙂 (be careful to use the correct procedure according to your model)

Its not possible,you can use custom ROM that looks like jellybean 4.2.2. but atm only nexus 10,nexus 7,nexus 4,galaxy s4 have 4.2.2.
