VTEC or Valve Timing Electronic Control is a system that’s been used by Honda in passenger cars since 1991. I believe the 1991 NSX was the first production vehicle to get this system. It has since been used in several other Honda vehicles. Late model VTEC equipped vehicles use the iVTEC system which also changes cam timing as well as lift and duration. The system is designed to give you the ‘best of both worlds’. You get to switch between 2 cam profiles. One for fuel economy, one for performance. A lot of people think that when VTEC kicks in you get an extra boost of power. Not true in my experience. It does however extend the torque curve to give you more performance after it does switch over. There is no set RPM where VTEC switches. The computer looks at several variables and calculates when to activate the VTEC solenoid. It’s a cool system and for the most part rarely has issues. The most common issues I’ve seen with VTEC are the result of low, or incorrect oil viscosity. So if you have a VTEC engine, keep the oil topped off and make sure you use the viscosity listed on the oil cap. The animations are courtesy Honda Motor Company, thanks guys.

Any thoughts on the VTC valve rattle that happens on cold weather starts with K series engines? It's a common "problem", but not sure if it is actually harmful. I have a 2014 CR-V that does this.
So what does this do for the engine? I understand how it works now, but I still don't understand what benefit it provides the engine.

2003 Honda Accord lx 2.4L 4Cyl.
I drive it 1200 miles per year.
Haven't changed oil in 1 year.
The Honda Svc. Dealer said I didnt need to change oil till I got to 3000 miles. When I went in to change it out he looked at me funny and said that I would be throwing out good oil.
Is he right? I drive enough to get the engine very hot cause I use ac.
I dont want my oil to gel and cause my engine to seize up.

Will the pistons out of a 1995 4cylinder Honda accord vtec engine, interchange with pistons out of a 1996 regular Honda accord 4cylinder?

Nothing to do with the timing its change the lift of the valve. The vvt on front of the cam where the chain runs its what change the timing

VVTi = Variable Valve Timing w/intelligence….. That's what I learned after my son bought a 2013 Toyota Corolla S with a 1.8 Liter Engine.
Not sure if they were the 1st but the crx and civic had it before the NSX around 89/90. Good info tho.

If youre going to hate on a car that is reliable, easy to work on, straight forward, and drives way over the 300k mile mark, then i guess you should just stick to whatever you drive. Dont go hating on my brand. I still drive my 93 si, and you know what, it still cranks drives and engages like it did without issues.

VTECs are the fusion between an electric engine and a LS. This engine can still run smoothly at 400k miles, as a matter of fact it can last forever. Every single Power boost is the equivalent of a Tyrannosaurus Fart.

Hi Eric. I have a 2005 Ridgeline 3.5 engine. Check engine light comes on with DTC P2647 rocker arm actuator system stuck on bank 1, no other warning lights, no oil problem, engine runs fine. I have changed oil twice, check engine light comes back on almost immediately. I took vehicle to Honda dealer to have the ecm programmed they didn't do it.
I'm a jaguar Land Rover tech, I'm not very familiar with this Honda issue. Ant suggestions??

The DOHC version seems noticeable when the system kicks in, but on my '04 TL (UA6), it is SOHC and is unnoticeable.
