While at SEMA 2015 I had the honor of meeting Kenji Sumino, president of GReddy, and Sung Kang who you may know as ‘Han’ from The Fast and the Furious franchise. Kenji found out that Sung was building a 1973 Datsun 240Z as a project car. Kenji has a special affection for these cars and reached out to Sung about helping him with the build. I’m sure you wouldn’t say no either.
During the interview I could tell that both Sung and Kenji were very passionate about the car. It was infectious. In fact, I want to go out and get one of these cars now. As a matter of fact, the first car I ever worked on as a professional mechanic was a 1972 240Z. It seems we have something in common.
The cherry on top is the night this interview was filmed, Kenji and Sung won best in show. I hear it was a heck of a party. Congratulations guys. It’s an amazing car and is well deserved.
Learn more about the build here.

So let me get this straight… You found a classic car in "perfect" condition with no rust, and then started hacking on it. If you're going to cut up a car like that, get one that's rusty and let someone else who actually appreciates a classic car buy it and treat it with respect. Sad…
Hearing that Sung wanted to pay his respects to the original designer was really touching. I wholeheartedly respect that kind of thinking and give huge props to everyone who worked on this vehicle. It looks fantastic.
which are the tires and wheels measures?
Please see my post below….I needed to continue because it was too long…..Nissan actually wanted Mr.K to fail….but he didn't! The Datsun 510 was a hit and ended up becoming a a cult classic along with the 240. Mr K is not very well known in Japan even though he lived there before he died last year. He is a GOD for all Datsun fans here in the USA!….Mr Katayama was a very nice and generous man and I'm privileged to have shared a meal with him.
I have 2 comments….One, you didn't show any great shots of this car what so ever…unless I missed something. TWO, I can't believe the idiot owner doesn't understand the history of his own car manufacturer. Here's the history in a nutshell directly from Mr Katayama's (Mr. K) mouth ( I ate dinner with Mr K in Japan with my friend Shin Yoshikawa who is a well know cut away drawing artist.) Mr K worked for Nissan at the time and he wanted to bring Nissan to the States. First you must understand that the Japanese culture are highly in fear of embarrassing themselves. Failure to them is extremely embarrassing! Mr K wasn't the most liked person at Nissan and when he said that he would like to take Nissan to the US, Nissan executives laughed and said no way! After pleading and selling them on the idea, the executives finally said ok but we will change the name to Datsun (in case they failed…there would be no embarrassment to the Nissan brand). Also….behind closed doors……..
Datsun was a marketing company for Nissan in North America until 1985 or 1987, my '86 Sentra said both on the hatch.
buddy of mine had a 240z with a 3 litre and four barrel Webber, this was 25 years ago, nice car
Would love to actually see the car.
Han! Fan of your work!
Fast and furious what?… Whats this guy name again?…
It is a marketing skeem why help famous people who get all parts donated as to one normal person works hard to buy ur stuff bs, do love the car
Met*
I coulda methin but i worked that day >.<
I voted down because I didnt even get to see the car. Its just them talking.
awesome! old school all the way.
A car to create some memories with… lol, the marketing from these guys is priceless
Congratulations for all your work from the first to the last video has been a dramatic improvement in all aspects , once again the power of the car meets the people who really have a passion and want to improve their knowledge day by day and not afraid to share their ideas and interests with respect and best humor.
damn, after watching this you see the disgust in Kenji and Sung's eyes…lol good job host, they don't ever want to see you again.
Eric the car Douche, dude get your etiquette right.
Show us the car, I can listen to myself talk for 7 minutes.
Really?! You're "The Car Guy"?! Datsun/Nissan, I don't get it! You don't know who you're interviewing?!
awesome
wish i went to sema this year, wouldve love to meet eric the car guy!
Can't wait to see this car when GT7 comes out.
I've gotta say considering you don't do interviews very often (from what I've seen at least) you did one hell of a job Eric. You should do more of these it was quite entertaining 🙂
approved !!
Awesome….
That car looks awesome but it should had been wangan blue imo
I love that Sung Kang is down to earth and a car guy, very cool
hey my 95 Mustang has an issue where the heat and ac will only blow through the defroster. some say vaccum leak and other say a connector near the beater corr gets unplugged sometimes. no I don't want to take my dash apart for it to be fine. have you heard of this before and is there any other things that could cause it.
host is an idiot… zero general car knowledge
I heard you did a seminar at the show. I read it afterward. Wish I could have got to meet you.
hey Eric I really need your thoughts on something. I have a 2000 Saturn sl1 sohc and it's had heating troubles for a while. I've replaced everything (radiator, water pump, thermostat, hoses, caps, etc) and still, when it idles and gets up to temperature it boils over (ive flushed it and put 50/50 mix in) and it still does it. i got that UView head gasket tester and its not detecting any co2 in the cooling system. any thoughts on what could be causing the boil over drom the reservoir ? thank you in advance.
YOUR CHANNEL HAS GONE TO YOUR HEAD YOU ARE BECOMING A THUMB DOWN
Thank you for being one of the few to actually talk to the GREDDY guy and not just focus on Sung Kang. It was a car built buy a group of friends not just one person.
I'm glad they won, flashy design is overrated and simple design makes you pay more attention to the details
" We wanted to do a weekend garage build…." Then has others do all the work. He makes it sound like he did the work really. Its funny. But an amazing car to say the least.
Wow I didn't know you were going to be at Sema. I would've looked all over the place for you! It would've been great to meet you. I was there with part of the Sema student program and your videos have helped me a lot. I've been watching since 3 years ago and now I'm pursuing a career in the automotive industry. I'm from California btw @ericthecarguy
I think it was 1983 when Nissan was running the TV ads campaign that "Datsun is now Nissan!"
Eric, if you're ever in the North Georgia area or Atlanta, send me a message in advance and I'll let you drive my '76. It's 100% stock sans the exhaust but I think you'll really like it. Or not, but it would still be an honor to meet you and let you drive it.
ugh now the price of these cars are going to go up!
