Replacing A Hydroboost Unit – EricTheCarGuy
This is actually the first one of these that I replaced, it’s a little more complicated than a regular vacuum booster but not by much. I looked up the procedure for installing the system and it said to crank the engine without starting it, if I were to do it again I’m not sure I would bother with this because the fluid didn’t seem to flow until I revved the engine past 2500, once I did this things started to work normally.

Bitch, Bitch, Bitch, Botch,…I retired from an auto repair shop. ALL cars, trucks, and yes, especially vans,…suck to work on, and they just keep getting worse. But I found that some mechanic's who seriously bitched pissed and moaned about working on ANY particular pain-in-the-ass car, getting seriously angry, the job was sometimes half-assed and they had to work on it again, because, they botched the job in the first place cutting corners to get the car out of there faster. You seem light hearted about it though like its sort of, "all in fun", even though it is a bitch to work on.
Thanks for the video, very informative. I know Astros suck to work on, I have a 2002 AWD 116,000 miles and the Booster just failed. I had to drive clear across town with no brakes to get it home.
This is my only vehicle right now.
I wish you told us the size of the wrenches and sockets you needed. Thanks a hole

Hi Eric, Have you ever had a problem after replacing the Hydroboost with the front brakes apply at idle? I shut off the engine and the front brakes release.
Thank you. My Astro 2003 looks to be leaking, so soon I want to replace the Hydroboost Unit, Master Cylinder and the Reservoir. I would like to flush everything and put new break oil and power steering oil to do the complete service. Should I replace everything first and then flush it? I need your advice. Please help me.
Is the booster the same on the g25 or express?? Are they interchangeable??
What if theres no brake pedal resistance I didnt replace the unit but did remove and reinstalled it now I have no brakepedal pressure ??
Don’t worry, it’ll suck but it’ll make you a man.
Love that. I’m two knuckles deep in a 2005 Tahoe with adjustable pedals.
Hey that was a great video because I have power steering issues and I know there was curious to how it was done
I feel ya, I hate VANS. I refuse to work on them
Excellent video, you helped me a lot! Somebody told you don't like to work on Astro, is that right? =p
Did I mention I hate like working on Astro vans. You took the words out of my mouth. Good job.
Your a beast
Good day;
My neighbor has a 2000 chevy 2500 diesel 4wd and brake pedal went to floor.
IT has the hydraulic Fluid (power steering pump) power brake booster .
I tinker and want to try save him a buck.
No complaint of steering issue.
I felt underside at Master /booster union and feel minimal fluid. No puddle or honest trace of a external leak.
Jumped in truck hit brake pedal- to floor.
I let truck run a bit then shut off – pedal to floor.
I held foot on pedal and started – no build up.
If I take foot off- pedal will return out.
I have not worked on a hydr, just the old canister suction type.
On another vid it was concluded a ABS pump was the prob on a like issue.
I think the pedal/booster start/ stop engine pre tests lead me to the booster.
Greatly appreciate your thoughts if I have misunderstood sequence of diagnosing.
Best; Tom
Wow Eric really A beautiful video, I think it's you and CrisFix who take the cake when making videos about repairs on cars, oh sorry vans! 😛
You guys are really amazing in the clarity and the speed that you guys go through the video.
Good camera angles and overall amazing.
Have an issue with my Chevy Express and seems the same scenario that has to be done! Well done and thanks for the push to want to repair it by yourself.
A++ Video.
Astro spark plugs. Have fun.
Good details on the removal & installation. Thanks for sharing. I wasn't sure how to get the rod off of the brake pedal. Thanks to you, I now know how. Now I gotta get back to changing the one out on my truck. Stays safe.
Looks like I’ll be doing this myself.. I was quoted $800 for this job
Surprised you didnt use ratcheting wrenches
Thanks Brother very good advice. ðŸ˜ÂÂðŸ‘ÂÂðŸ‘ÅÂ
Great, great video. I love how you explain and photograph each step. i especially like the little tips and tricks you throw out. I have a chance to get an old GMC Safari at a good price. Now I know I can do the work it needs, thanks
How do you adjust the pushrod on the new hydro boost unit? When I received my new hydro boost unit, the rod was out much longer than the one I removed. Cant find any info, Did anyone else have this problem?

Is there a gasket that goes between the master cylinder and power booster? I replaced my booster on my Chevy G30 and I have a mystery leak, not from lines, I'm thinking it's coming from the mating contact between the two? Thanks
Yeeeaaa amigo gracias
You just destroyed the power steering pump…. congrats!
I'm about to replace one on a 1977 lincoln mark 5 as soon as i get the engine back in. I'm sure i'll have room to spare under the 5 foot hood.
