I know this is outside my normal auto repair videos, but having gone through this myself and saving the cost of sending my xbox off to be fixed I thought it falls in with the ETCG spirit. Also, when I went searching for info in this problem I saw a lot of bad videos out there. I figured I’d throw my hat in and see if I could make a better one. Hopefully, it helps you.

My gamer tag is EricTheCarGuy, but to be honest, I hardly ever have time to play much anymore. Making repair videos keeps me pretty busy these days. There are worse problems to have, trust me.

Here is a link to codes for the xbox red rings as promised in the video: http://forums.xbox-scene.com/index.php?showtopic=484726

As stated in the video the fastener size is #10-32×3/8″. You’ll need 8 of them. Also, you can’t use a hair dryer, it’s not hot enough. You’ll need to use a heat gun, if not, then the repair won’t take.

Lastly I have found this to only be a temporary solution. It is very possible that the Xbox will fail again. At that time you can perform this procedure again but each time you do it’s likely to take less time before it fails again. My solution was to purchase a new, black version of the xbox and since then I haven’t had anymore problems.

  1. I've just got an Xbox 360 and I'll it does is flash red 3 ov the 4 bits round the power button, not happy at all, I can't take it all apart, I'd end up with a load of screws left after!! I'd put it back together!! Lol, anyone know an easier way than taking it all to bits please?

  2. I never put double washers on the bottom cause it would flex the board when the screws were put back in. And in the top side of the board I would slide nylon washers in between the heat sink and the board then when you tighten the screws it would keep them from over tightening and flexing. I never used the heat gun but that seemed to work really nice. Really good video though.

  3. Great video, but didn’t have flux or heat gun. So I followed directions up to taking heat sink off then wrapped motherboard in aluminum foil on a piece of cardboard. Heated in wife’s oven at 350 degrees for 20 min then reassembled, have played games for hour so far

  4. He said “RadioShack” what in the hell is “RadioShack”

  5. interesting points ,if anyone else wants to discover

try Saankramer Electronic Magazine System (do a search on google ) ? Ive heard some interesting things about it and my neighbor got cool success with it.

  6. This will work for a while. Why does it work? because the cpu and gpu are soldered to the motherboard one of those solder joints will have cracked over time, It won't be giving you a proper connection anymore which is why you get the rrod. This works because he applied extra force with the washers which puts more downward force on the cpu and gpu this will bridge the broken solder joint. This will work for an amount of time until it red rings again. The better solution is for him to put flux around the corners of the cpu and gpu and use that same heat gun method. heating up the board and eventually over the cpu and gpu, after cleaning off the goup on top the of CPU and GPU will make the flux go under those chips it will melt the solder and rejoin that cracked solder. This is better than the washer method and will fix it for longer. Those xbox 360 boards were shit and prone to flex. Don't know why microsoft didn't have standoffs for the motherboard which would allow it to sit flat and have air flow underneath the motherboard that and not being cheap on the motherboard and better cooling overall would of fixed this issue. They only solved the issue later with the newer xbox 360's when APU's became a thing which is just a CPU with an inbuilt GPU. The same design flaw happened with Sony's Playstation 3.

  7. I absolutely love this video. I very much appreciate how clear you talk, and that you detail and show every step of the process, for dinguses like me. I like that a lot. I didn't even know about the error codes. Mine unfortunately gets a code "0110", which is a RAM error. Can't be good. But either way, one of these days if I ever get around to trying to fix this issue, I'll definitely use your video as a reference for getting the Xbox apart and back together. I'm interested in doing console repairs one day, and I'll certainly write this channel down and use it as a reference for Xboxes. Very good. Unfortunately not the issue with mine, but for a disassembly/reassembly, hard-pressed to find anything better and more informative.

  8. Don't ever discard the xclamps. A standard PC has a backplate socket support the hack has nothing. All it took was one idiot that started this stupid idea.

  9. While this technically will fix your Xbox, it's a temporary fix, how long is going to last depends, it could be a few days to maybe a couple of years. The issue with the xbox was bad unleaded solder used for the cpu and gpu. (Had to be unleaded to adhere to EU laws, not all Unleaded solder is bad). And with time the Xbox would heat up and cool down when used causing the board to flex and the bad solder to crack not making proper contact with the cpu or gpu, of course this leads to a not working cpu or gpu, and without both of them working ,the xbox cannot boot. When heating up the board it isn't key to heat up the whole board like in the video, the CPU and the GPU are the main to focus on. By heating up either one of them you are essentially reflowing them, which means that you're essentially melting the solder causing those previously mentioned cracks in the solder to disappear, by adding the washers and screwing the heatsink on tightly you are essentially putting more pressure on the CPU and GPU so that there is less room for cracks in the solder. But of course these home made remedies never actually fix the issue, which is the bad solder, to actually replace the solder you need special machines and stencils and what not which is pretty expensive.

  10. Dude repared this like repairing a car almost 10 years ago lol I am suprised he didn't damaged that board on the metal table lol or the chip with that screw driver. However the Video was very good.

  11. The only proper fix is to reball the gpu with lead solder, and after that, fit a 2nd generation gpu heatsink, the one with the heatpipe and fit a 50 mm or 60 mm 12v fan on top of it, sucking the hot air out of the top. You'll notice there are holes in the metal casing, just where a fan should go, but they didn't make any holes for the heat to escape. I guess they were planning on fitting a fan there but never bothered with it? I managed to squeeze a 60 mm fan in there but had to cut away a bit of the case to make it fit and the gpu heatsink is very cool now. It's also cooling the cpu heatsink as well. Relying on passive cooling for the gpu was never going to work, given how much heat the early chips kicked out.
I'm looking at adding another heatpipe to the back of the gpu heatsink, that ends near near the rear exhaust fan to cool it even further.

  12. But the problem is, that this little fella has already been modified using RODD kit. So I guess the kit is not working. 🙁 and i am wondering it has been 5 years from puting this video online, is the xbox still working?

  14. He had the wrong code his code was
0102 which means his CPU needs reflowing he thought the code was 1023 which is a one light error meaning the network chip needs replacing but still cool video dude
