Take a look back at when the Trucks! shop wedged a Ford dual overhead cam 4.6 liter V-8 into a 2001 ‘Ranger’ based truck to build a smaller version of Ford’s Lightning. Since “Mini Lightning” doesn’t sound that tough, we’re calling this Project – Rolling Thunder!
PARTS USED IN THIS EPISODE:
Royal Purple: Royal Purple Break-In Oil.
I need help 97 Ford Ranger
Ford in no way says that what happened here was " Standard procedure"
Comp-i zitt. hmmm
I have a 2000 Ford Ranger extended cab. I replaced the original 3.0L with a remanufactured 3.0L 6 a few years ago. The remanufactured engine is doing fine. It took me some time to get it done because I don't have a garage. I am a 'shade tree' mechanic without the shade tree. And I have picked up my mechanical skills the Nike way (just do it). All I know is what I picked up from manuals and some videos. I never had any real training.
Eh my Tacoma makes 435whp so a full size truck with 400whp isn’t much. The ranger though definitely sick.
I want to build a 2010 Ranger to have a tow capacity of and F-150. Is it possible? What would the ranger need to increase the tow capacity?
Ford already did this with the 5.4 supercharged triton
I've got a 5.0 V8 swapped Ranger, but I went another route. Lift, 33" tires, 4.56 gears. Fun little flareside.
I cant believe with all the money and “toys” the shop has, there is no power washer, or wash bay. Heck @KevinTetz I got a pressure washer from Auction Nation pretty cheap, and it was brand new in the box.
Why you don't complete the episode to the end and show finil finished of the car
What is the intro song called
Think I would have put a Mustang EcoBoost engine in it.
My 99 ranger 4.0 3.73 rear end with bfgoodrich off road tires can break mouse real easy
The lincoln continental isn't a good option for this swap. The block is completely different, and has motor mount locations similar to a Taurus Vulcan and duratec V6. You would still have to find a regular rear wheel drive style block and swap the continental heads on. The continental heads are also different. More similar to the 1996-1998 cobra B heads. The mark VIII is the most desirable, as it's a teksid block.
I had an '87 Ford Ranger with the 2.3-liter four-cylinder engine. I purchased it new for $7K, and it came with no extras, no radio, or even a cigarette lighter. I loved that truck. Driving on the highway, it got a fantastic fuel economy, but around town, it was a thirsty little beast.
instead of toothpaste use Mothers Mag and aluminum rim polish it will absolutely give your a body shop finish… and its only 2 – 3 bux per jar.
Conti 4V won't work unless you're able to drill the block for the missing motor mount holes.
ive got a mark 8 engine and a black ranger in mygarage right now, brb
God I remembering watching this episode after musclecar on spike back in the day.
You guys do know that Ford actually built a Ranger with an actual Lightning motor and drive train in it? It was intended for production, but Ford, in their wisdom, decided that most people wouldn't be able to handle it. The Lightning Bolt.

Ouh a 4.6 swap
As cool as the toothpaste on the headlight was those aren't expensive they're like $10 to get brand new.
This was filmed some time ago.
The headlight polishing also bullshit because most of the time the fading and color are in the inside.
Navigator 32v and Lincoln lsc Mark 8 are piled up everywhere. Easier to find the donor than a motor these days.
Kevin Tetz looks like the Tiger King before the crack cocaine took hold.
LINCOLN CONTINENTALS ARE ONLY A FWD VERSION . THAT ENGINE CANNOT BOLT UPTO A RWD VEHICLE LIKE A TRUCK, MUSTANG OR ECT
I always thought about this exact build….I put a mark8 engine in a tbird once
A nasty 4.6l when you could have went coyote or even voodoo……..
Svt made one with 5.4L back in day saw those guys rip burning with in it in their parking lot they called it lightingbolt n expedition was called thunderbolt
Isn’t the lightning a 5.4 ? Lol
351 Windsor stroked to a 408 would be a smaller engine package with a lot more horsepower and torque
Round up weed killer works great on headlights. Think monsanto makes it. Spray it on heavy!
So 250k miles later and about 650$ I just rebuilt the top end on my 04 Ford ranger 3.0L, and a little tlc. I should have just put in a 5.0 or a 4.6.. :(:(:(:(:(
Oh shit. I remember this build. Took a really long time but it came out badass
Guys i like your show but you talk way to much and you never finish half your projects.
Once you sand the headlights though you also permanently remove any remaining oleophobic UV coating. These coatings cannot be replicated at home and they will just haze even quicker and worse than before. Better off just buying new OEM (not aftermarket) headlamp assemblies.
