How to Replace Front Struts Part 1 – EricTheCarGuy

Well I’m finally getting this one up for you, sorry. It’s been a busy week and I just haven’t had the time to finish this one up but here it is in all its glory. Yes, it is something besides a Honda, in fact it’s a 2000 Pontiac Grand Am. I do work on other cars just not that often since I know Honda’s and Acura’s so well. I hope to do a broad range of videos covering a wide range of subjects so keep watching, eventually I’ll get to your request. For now enjoy this video and if you use the spring compressors I did in this video be careful, like I said in the video I’ve seen people get hurt doing this do take it seriously.

  1. To avoid having to mess with spring compression, you can replace the entire assembly as a unit. That's how I handled a broken a broken spring on my 2000 Grand Am.

Granted, this did cost me nearly double what just the spring would have, but it dodged the safety issue and general annoyance of removing and reinstalling springs and ensured the parts the failed spring would have put the most stress on wouldn't be an issue.

  2. Eric, I want to get a better/smoother ride from my 2006 Ford 500, should I upgrade struts/shocks on front and rear? Or would it be a waste of money? Thank you,,John

  3. Eric I've been a loyal viewer for quite a while now and I gotta say you look terrified doing this job and I was going to attempt this but you make it look scary

  4. I buy the Strut/Coil Spring assembly. Costs me an extra $100 but I get the job done faster and don't risk my life doing it. My well being is worth more than $100.

  5. Hey Eric, I have front struts that have the two bolts on the bottom to mount. However it looks like they are both set to the right (passenger) side, how to I rotate that bracket to fit on the left (driver) side.?

  6. ok i'm no expert but what i've learned is to loosen the center screw a few turns while it's still on the vehicle just a few turns that way once the spring is compressed it easier to get off

  7. Holy shit. That looks like a disaster waiting to happen. Why would he use such a compressor when there are much better ones that insure the damn thing doesn't slip?

  8. could you just replace the whole assembly? For a home gamer I imagine that would be the most practical and safest way of D.I.Y. without having to spend the money to have it done in the shop

  9. Have you ever replaced a strut where there is only a single nut up top instead of the common "quick strut"? There are no videos on such strut replacement.

  10. If you don't know what you're doing I would forget this I've seen it done without those compressors I don't know how they did it but it was a murder

  12. Completely newbie question… If just the strut bushing is bad, can you replace it without removing the entire strut by just letting the weight of the car compress the spring?? As a COMPLETE NOVICE at car repairs (although trying to learn), is this feasible or is this asking for trouble? I have a missing bushing on a 2002 Volvo V70 (you can see that it is missing and can be shaken around by hand). I don't know that the entire strut/shock mechanism is bad. From what I am reading, Volvos appear to be notorious for bad strut mounts and bushings in the front… but again, I am a complete novice. I am just poor but really smart and believe I can do just about anything with YouTube as a guide. LOL!!! But those spring compression tools make me nervous as all get out!!! I would almost be tempted to use FOUR instead of two!!! LOL!!!
