Yes, you heard right. I hope to take the Fairmont to the track soon and I’ll need to pass inspection to make a pass down the track. Given that I had brake hoses that were dry rotted and cracked, I decided to replace them in this video. This process will work for more than just my Fairmont, it’s a pretty basic operation that will apply to most vehicles. Just be sure to work quickly to avoid running the master cylinder dry. Other than that, have the correct tools handy and I’m sure you’ll have it done in no time.
For those of you astute viewers that noticed the ‘creaking’ noise coming from the right front caliper, that’s you’re next video. When it goes live, I’ll post a link here.

@5:12 at this stage I’m already thinking hack saw, dremmel, sawzall, blow torch. Hey at least I didn’t say 3lb hammer.
Christ – you made a right mess of that, then didn't you (04:45)!
ETCG, and Brian! Thanks for sharing your mechanical knowledge on this channel…… Great DIY info! ..2 thumbs…… and 2 big toes up, way up on this video! SUPER helpful….
My breaks were sticking on the front passenger side an I bleeded the valve an it releases so that in all says to replace the flex line , so I replaced the flex line an it's still having the same issue I can still bleed the valve an it will release but a few times breaking down the road it will start grabbing again, what is the issue now, help ???
have you ever used the bleeders that have a check ball in them so you can bleed them with only one person.
Maybe to close the brake line w/cup on that side w/broken bleed valve, change it for a new one prior to bleeding, if you have a spare valve of course, or not in a hurry to order the one? Thank you very much for the informative film, so many techniques are shown. Seems like every time I watch it I discover something new.
very helpful Eric.Thank you tony. Leics Uk
Thanks man
Great video!
Well done, lots of good tip's. Thanks ðŸ‘ÂÂ
I've watched thousands of car repair videos. I've come to the conclusion that Eric the Car Guy and Eric from South Main Auto Repair are the best mechanics in YouTube. There are many other good mechanics but the Two Erics are the very best in my humble opinion.
done me discs and pads on me gt speed hoses now thanks for you help sir
Okay, well 3 hours later after my last message and my world has become a lot more interesting. My reservoir only has a MINIMUM line, no Max line. It's not scraped off or under dirt, it was simply never there. Then when I heard the words "keep it topped off" I figured there is no maximum level,. So what did I do, I took everybody at their literal word and followed the instruction from those who know best. Well, what happened next when I started her up reversed a few feet, pumped on the brakes, drove forward and turned off the engine. What I saw next disgusted me, brake fluid dripping all over the place right up inside where the full 30-gallon gas tank is, sandwiched in between the chassis and the tank is where this is leaking from. So now I have to try and remove a six-foot-long gas tank that has been attached since 1999. Its a 99 chevy 3500 box truck. I may even have to cut through the wood floor to get to the hose connections on top of the tank before I'm ready to drop the tank. Should be a ton of fun! So all I want to say is that in situations like this where such a possibility may occur due to miscommunication., it is very critically important to use an appropriate exact word to describe what is actually meant.
Does anyone have suggestions for when you do not have someone to help with the pedal?
amazing:) thank you
thanks man your videos are a real help!
Since you are now aware the bleeder screw is defective how about replacing it on both sides to a 10 MM or 3/8, that's what I would have done.
Thank you for the insights on avoiding problems while changing a brake hose. Time to go get the parts.
Thx 4sharing
Thank you for being so thorough. It really helps! I feel much more confident in fixing my own brake line in my Kia Sedona. It was interesting to see how you bleed the brakes. Im not normally mechanically inclined so this is a real learning process.
M16? I had my SnapOn sockets over 50 years the first time I intentionally took the M16 out of the tray.
So I'm looking to paint my calipers while I have the hoses off, I know it's superficial, but I think OEM calipers are ugly without paint (shiny wheel, shiny rotor, discolored caliper). Is there any kind of cap I can put on the line to buy me some time to sand/spray or am I better off painting calipers with everything attached and taped off?
Thank you so much, found a torn brake line on my 82 ElCo and was super discouraged with having to do new brake lines but now I feel confident to tackle it myself
Hi,
I would say that using this method you cannot get all they air out of the system as when you let air into the system it can travel anywhere within the line and you will need to do a full bleeding following the correct sequence specified by the manufacturer for your vehicle. Generally speaking you need to bleed the caliper which is the furthest away from your master cylinder first. Please correct me if am wrong. Also is this a front/rear split break system or diagonal? Thanks,D
you made it look so easy and simple i hope i find it just as easy
Hey my brake pedal is spongy and sinks in, so planning to change the hose and do brake bleed. My question is, should I do brake bleed first before changing the hoses or it's the other way around? Thanks for your help!
i have a line wrench and it's still wanting to round the nut on the line. what am i doing wrong?
I never use my brake line tools, vice grips or a pipe wrench if needed. sorry guy.
Why will my brake line not screw into the hose? I bought a new one and I can get it started by hand, then when I tighten it with a wrench it snaps loose again. It's like the threads are not catching. The tightest I can get it before it comes loose still leaks.
Do you change all the hoses and then bleed the system? Or do you bleed after each brake hose is changed?
Honestly thank you on behalf of a lot of people out there im sure.
YouTube channels like yours are a blessing and you actually are making people's lives easier out there
Thank you for the post. The rear passenger line blew and my wife made it home safely. I replaced all four, bled then. The fluid has been replaced, the brakes feel great! And I got more for my money. 2012 Dodge Grand Caravan 100k miles.
Thanks Eric, needed this video today
Are you allowed to get air in the brake system by installing these, then after all is installed , bleed and flush to where all air will be taken out?
so when you take off the brake hoses , are you introducing air into the brake system? It's just that you don't care because you will later bleed and flush it afterwards?
I have to watch what u see on some videos. One video said to pinch off ur hose while working on the brakes, Not!!!! It costed me more money!!!!. Anyhow,,, good video
Eric, my Grandson got me watching you doing the Auto A/C all great videos so now I am trying to watch the rest of your videos and I am thinking you are a good instructor as your tools are not out of the reach of the normal consumer who is simply trying to ave money by working on their own vehicle … Keep up the good work and stay dirty !!!!!
Thanks man
I'm not really comfortable with the use of vice grips.
Thank you for this video as I'm about to change my OEM to SS braided. I do have a question about bleeding the brakes when I change the lines. Do I change all the lines first than bleed the calipers or do I bleed each line as I replace them from farthest rear to closest front?
There is no me without you…if you have any questions feel free to ask or email me! Thanks
awesome vid. thanks Eric
My brake hose is bulged after I reinstall a new brake caliper. Do I need a new brake hose or should I just simply take it off and unclog the hose? It's the hose that goes into the caliper. The bulge is at the end of the hose meeting the brake line.
Can I do one side and bleed that side, then do the other side and bleed that side?
