How To Perform A Power Balance Test – EricTheCarGuy

Home

As I said in the video I do get a lot of questions regarding engine performance, the power balance test is very helpful at nailing down an engine miss should you have one. I hope to cover the coil pack ignition systems at some point in the future as the opportunity presents itself, sorry I don’t have it for you hear now but I will post it as soon as I get the opportunity. Thanks for watching.

  1. l got a 2003 toyota corolla, it takes time to start. car has no power when taking off, (weak). I got codes p0300,p0301 and p0302. parts change: all four coils, throttle position sensor, all four spark plugs, mass air flow sensor. parts I cleaned: air intake and idle valve. I got same codes again………finally I replaced injector 1 and 3, now I get codes: p0300, p0302 and p0304, should I now replace injector 2 and 4. PLEASE, SOMEONE OUT THERE HELP.

  2. But how would you do this if each cylinder has it's own spark plug, you don't want to unplug the plug cables one at a time while the engine is running or isn't that a problem? (it seems a comparable method to what you did here with the coil connectors) '81 golf mk1.

  3. How do you diagnose a Dual-pack ignition coil if one coil stops working? example: 2008 Dodge charger SRT8 has distributor-less ignition system with TWO coils per cylinder. If one Coil of the DUAL coil goes south the engine will Run OK.

  4. I tried this to V10, and couldn't tell difference when I unplugged coil. There must be too many cylinders to notice. LOL. Just changed all 10 coils and fixed problem.
Hope eBay ignition coils lasts.. (It was Delphi).

  5. Hey i got a 2002 Honda Odyssey with 203000 miles and i Have a lot of problems with it. I am having some transmission problems sometimes when i turn right and start to accelerate it fails to shift into 3rd gear and i have to get into shift down on the column and then shift back up. A second problem i have is that the sometimes with its cold or cool outside i will start my car up and the engine will throb up and down with out me touching the petal, usual by about 500 rpm. I was thinking it was an ecu problem but i am not sure.

  6. There's nothing quite as exciting as getting hit with leaking voltage from a spark plug lead when you're not expecting it. Especially if you're grounded on your other hand.

  7. Great video! Just a quick question: I have a 97 Infiniti Q45, it's a V8 and suspect a misfire in one of the cylinders. I want to do this test, but one side of the engine is covered by the intake piping. When I change the plugs, I need to take off the entire intake to throttle body to get to 4 of the cylinders' coils. If I do this test without the intake on, it won't be getting an accurate reading at the MAF. Will it matter for this test? or am I good to go ahead without the intake on? Thanks for all your help!

  8. Hey i have a 86 ford f150 and for reason it has no get up and go power its a 302 5.0 i changed the plugs changed the fuel filter and put new gas and gas cleaner in her but still no go power if you think you would know could you let me know? thanks.

  9. Also if you don't have a test light you can switch the coil pack with one next to it.  If the problem moves to that cylinder then its your coil pack.
