My brother brought me his 2005 Honda Element. He said he had difficulty shifting it into gear. When I inspected it, I found the clutch pedal was on the floor, so he had no clutch at all. Further inspection revealed that the clutch master cylinder had failed.
In this video I show you, not only how to fix this issue, but also how to drive the vehicle just enough to get it to safety.
Thanks for watching!

@24:41 Would that cause a noise; if not all the time at least sometimes?
I have to change my slave cylinder once a year… let's say I'm pretty good at driving and shifting without the clutch… and Good at changing slave cylinders
Eric @16:17 Is that socket and extension one piece or two? How do you like them? I might need to get a set.
Auto manufacturers tick me OFF! They only need to make their vehicle engine bays 1 to 2 inches wider so we can get into the bay to perform repairs.
I heard an interesting perspective on why not to get a manual. The guys like, "if I have to worry about leaking oil and power steering fluid I dont want to have to worry about a leaking clutch too".
My clutch pedal has been dead ever since I moved to an automatic. 🤪
I keep stomping on my dead pedal in the car when I hit the brakes after I take the motorcycle for a ride. ðŸ˜ÅÂ
I wish Ford had built the Rangers that way…
Glad your in your element â›…great tip as usual 🤷â€ÂÂ♂ï¸ÂÂðŸ¤â€Â
Hey Eric my friend has an 03 Accord with an extremely heavy clutch. You have to put that thing on the floor to get it in gear. Also barely releasing the clutch causes full movement. Also is difficult getting into gear. She'll do it, but it's a pain. Any suggestions? Thanks!
Next time, ETCG gives us some barely legal clutch action! I am SOOOO buying that bleeder!
I use to love being a Mechanic till they started making cars smaller an smaller an adding more an more crap under the hood an then back in the late 70's
80's there was 20 miles of lil plastic vacuum lines going everywhere , We had a lil guy in the shop we would hang him by his ankles in some places to get to certain parts myself being 6ft 3 an 250 lbs there was some places I just didn't fit you know like having to have over 2 feet of extensions with a wobble socket on the end –ok I'm IN an Locked – oh damn it slipped LOL , So In the 90's moved over to Heavy Equipment, while true there were a few wrench's that were damn near 3 feet long an heavy AF , Sockets that you needed both hands to pick up but it was a trade off , the electronic I really didn't mind as I sorta grew with the industry on that aspect of it an most of the ole timers just didn't want to learn the new systems,Dude I changed master and slave on my wife's 2005 Civic, and it's almost impossible to get all the air out of the line without removing the slave and line from the engine bay and hanging them up so all the air goes to the slave to bleed it. I spent 2 days with a vacuum assisted bleeder and it simply would not come out until I did this. Just hanging the slave up as high as possible, cracking the bleeder open, and applying some vacuum and the air literally came rushing out, reinstalled everything and I finally had a solid pedal. Just a heads up.
Eric's wife: how about some qualitytime after ur done with the Element
Eric: Great idea, let me get the penetrationoil darling.
I have to confess I have not watched ETCG for a while but used to all the time, but, SO HAPPY to see him at 1.58 Million subs! I love seeing long-term YouTubers plugging away over years!

Youre the best Eric.. learn new crap everytime
This reminds me of a night in Stetsonville, WI. Going to the in-laws middle of the night with the wife and kids and the hydraulic clutch won't work in my 1991 Pathfinder. Did the same thing to get us there and sure enough the slave cylinder was leaking like a sieve. That was under warranty. Got it replaced and it lasted until the truck was crushed at 260,000 miles
Great video.
I learned to drive stick without a clutch back in my old VW bug days. A vital skill.
Dying to see the next video transmission down.
Can’t wait to see your next video
There’s no volume
Helps to warm it up first!!!!
I need that fluid extractor in my life.
Something extra – In racing cars, the dead pedal is used to cut down the response time in activating the clutch and is integral to the smooth actuation of the clutch.
✌ï¸ÂÂ
You are a very lucky guy the slave cylinder is on the outside of the gear box I don't know who thought I know let's put it around the input shaft of the gear box! So you have to take the gear box out just to do a slave cylinder job! I think I will stick with my Landover 90 a ten minute job.dont you just love new technology..
Possibly some fingers on pressure plate could've broken off as well?
On an element it's more likely that one of the daisy petals on the pressure plate has broken, and wedged in between the clutch disc and flywheel. This is especially true if you have normal clutch pedal travel. Mine had this issue with the stock clutch, and I speed shifted it, and started it in gear from Minneapolis to Spearfish SD which is about 475ish miles. Honda addressed this by changing the OEM clutch brand to Exedy, which is far better than the first OEM, and has much smoother action. It'll be interesting to see if you have the same problem.
Umpteenth
As far as driving it is concerned – you can drive it long distance if you have to. To change gears, you'll need to match the speeds of the engine and transmission depending on which gear your in – quite tricky but can be done. Also you can pull the car into neutral without the clutch for smoother stopping. Just will have to shut the engine off, put it back into 1st/rev and then restart.
Big fan of that ratchet tooðŸ˜ÅÂ
Upgrade it to 6 speed!
Wowwwwwww😯time for tear down😉
8:20 I remember I couldn't bleed the clutch so went replacing both cylinders before buying tool to pump the air out. Anyway, first I replaced slave cylinder, can't make it work. So I buy used master cylinder, replace can't make it work. Ok, I'll buy a new master. I buy it and it comes without that part. My original has broken while I was removing so that used junkyard cylinder was still useful at providing something!
Probably originally air in the system was my problem and not cylinders but pumping pedal and bleeding without suction did nothing good. 15 euros for Chinese suction thingy sold locally and car was ready to rock.
Damn delay valve..lol.. same thing happened to my Civic
Notification squad!ðŸ‘ÂÂðŸÂ»
The Element shift boot is pretty cool.
Good Morning
"I recommend cleaning it before insertion"… that's what he said
