There’s been some hype about the 2017 Honda Civic Type R, and it’s proven itself by setting records on the Nurburgring. It hit a lap time of 7:43, which is a new record for a front-wheel-drive production car.
The Type R’s time beats out the previous record held by the VW Golf GTI Clubsport S which lapped the track in 7:49. The 2017 model is also 7 seconds quicker than the previous-generation model, according to Motortrend. The key to the new lap time is better cornering speed due to wider tires, a new suspension, and better aerodynamics. The Type R had street legal, track focused tires when it broke the record but took out the audio system and rear seats to make up for the weight added by the roll cage. Under the hood is 2.0-liter turbo four that puts out 306 horsepower and 295 lb.-ft. of torque. So Honda fans, be on the look out for this hot hatch later this spring.
