Not long ago I posted a short series of videos replacing the 2.4L K series engine in my, new to me, 2005 Honda Element. Many of you asked about what went wrong with the engine. In this video I tear the K series apart to find out why it didnt have compression in cylinder #2. I also add useful info on timing chain replacement, as well as some other common issues to look out for on the Honda K series engine.

I really like the knowledge and work you put into this and share with us! I must confess I switched to electric a year ago, and for a daily driver, not having to think about all these potential issues issues is a bliss. I still would like to have a (proper) gas powered car as a hobby, and that's why I will keep watching your videos.
Looks like the head was the main issue. New valves and valve guides should get that engine going again . That's a cheap fix at a machine shop and I bet that engine would keep kicking

I live about 4 hours away from you. I'm desperately trying to decide whether that engine could be made to fit in my riding mower. Mowing time is 3 hours weekly – I need to reclaim some of that time…
Great video Eric.Do you know what the consumption rate was before tear down? The reason i asked was my Honda civic d15b7 1994 had 400,000 and started burning oil of 1 qt every 200 miles.i bought new pistons & rings std size.when i got it apart the bores still had a little crosshatch BUT the OIL return holes on the pistons were ALL plugged on all cylinders.I had gotten tired of oil changes>40 + changes.I ran a drill bit through the holes/ put the rings only from the new piston on the old ones and BALL HONED THE CLYs.Reassembled ,it now has 540,000.and went back to 1/2 qt every 7,000 miles.mine you i bought the care new.that year was great to me.
Ill take the engine if u ship it to canada? Lol

OK, what is the purpose of the plastic insert in the number one cylinder water jacket?. I pulled one out yesterday and scratched my noggin' over it.
probably blew the engine and afterward changed the filter and oil just to sell it.

I'm sending this video to both of my kids in the hope they watch the machine that is under their hood and have a better appreciation of what keeps working perfectly for them day after day, season after season, year after year – and why their dad is such a maniac about oil changes and filters! 2004 CRV and 2007 Element!
Eric my 2003 honda element went 249000 miles. No problem I though these engines were bulletproof. And no I wasn't always light on the pedal. Yes I had the valves adjusted every 70 to 100 k. 😊ðŸ‘ÂÂÂÂ
The real problem with the K engine is that it is not a B engine. Or even D. Golden Age of Hondapower.

I've also never seen a better explanation (show and tell) of why solid valve lifters require periodic adjustment.
Exact same thing on my Element – cylinder #2 burnt exhaust valve. Previous owner never adjusted valves. So, a new valve, relapped all the others, new head gasket and head bolts and so far 40k kms later it runs great. Timing chain next…should have done it the first time..
Had a TSX, (07) with a manual 6 speed, and the K24, … i adored that thing. Sold it with a smidge under 300k miles. Dude put a new clutch in it and drives it still today. I still miss that thing. Great vid boss,…
That engine looks like it's a perfect candidate for a full rebuild. You can pretty much turn that into a brand new engine that'll last forever.

If you had decided to repair that engine you would still have to strip it down and replace a fair amount.
Otherwise it would be a half baked job.
Replacement of the engine was the right thing to do.
Very quick in comparison to a rebuild.

K24 is a terrific engine. We have 322k miles on ours! 2004 CRV.
I think the Element used k24a4 in 03-06 and k24a8 in 07-11
If the border were open, I’d have driven down to Ohio, and been on Eric’s doorstep by dinner time. It would have been a fun project to build a good running spare for my ‘03 element.
Guessing at the start, that its valve stem seals due to mileage causing oil burning. Not sure about low compression. I'm guessing valve related and not to do with the piston or cylinder.
EDIT: Actually surprised how worn out the rest of the engine was. Interesting stuff. I did my K series valve lash at about 65000 miles. Everyone of them were out of factory spec. Maybe every 50000 miles would be better?

I don't see the link to your email, but I'd LOVE to come take the engine off your hands. I've got a '91 Mercury Capri that I think would make an excellent chassis for it. I'd also love to have a bit of something of yours in my build, since you have taught me so much. I'm in New York, so it'd be a bit of a drive, but I'd absolutely make it.

I think people would watch you build a engine.
Routine valve adjustments would’ve prevented that and used to be part of major services like 60K services. Honda claims that they aren’t necessary anymore unless they’re noisey. Tight valves aren’t noisey and therein lies the problem.

Great video, Eric. Glad you’re not going to just junk that engine. Even with just a head rebuild, I’d think it’d continue to run for quite a while.
184k that's nothing my alero 2.4 currently 322k im a 1 owner back 191k replaced coolant leaking head gasket because antifreeze froze on a -50*f day did valve job there was thick dorito size carbon everywhere wiz wheeled that off but forgot to install new valve umbrella seals so it's got a puff of smoke every cold start iridium spark plugs never foul but do completely wear away every 130k
