In this video I dissect 2 D16Y7 Honda engines to find the cause of the failures they had. One engine had a catastrophic failure, a broken connecting rod, the other had a severe overheat condition. In addition to the dissections, I also provide information on vital engine parts and their functions as well as what to look for when they fail.

  1. People that abuse a engine like this should be forced to walk.How much effort does it take just to check the oil duh. If you can't check your oil you shouldn't be driving ; ) Oil is cheap engines are expensive.

  2. Having done service on a near identical model of the second engine , it’s a nice feeling recognizing little quirks and shapes specific to them.

  3. Can you tell me what the problem is with the following symptoms: slow coolant lose, engine have light back fire when accelerating, misfiring, not overheating, no oil in coolant reserve tank, it's a 2002 4runner with 190k? Interested in buying it to work on.

I will be doing this type of inspection and analysis on the original K20a3 that came in my Civic Si Hatchback , I have the manufacturers factory service manual on hand and will try follow the manufacturers procedures for overhauling this engine and also borrow some knowledge from these awesome videos.

  5. Yeah, people extending oil change intervals are usually the type that put the cheapest oil and "extend" its life, cuz they don't want to spend money on the good stuff.

    P.S Good stuff or cheap stuff, I never go more than 10 000 km or 6500 miles. For cheap oil – halve this number.

  6. Eric, when you save those small components, do you clean them then store together tagging the bag, for example, with car make, model, year, engine? Or do you store all keyways together, shoulder bolts together, etc.?

  8. My flickering oil light on my 1999 Camry was from sitting during the lockdown for 6 months, the oil filter got stopped up with stop-leak product I put in there a year earlier. just sitting there turned to glue.

  13. I have a 01-05 era civic. Their known for blowing gaskets but due to the exhaust/coolant port locations, the exhaust leaks into the coolant, steaming it and eventually running the car hot. Maybe the same thing here?

  14. I had a Honda D-series in my second car ever. It made to over 500 thousand kilometers, then just in case it was rebuilt with new bearings, rings and everything in the top end. It was around 12 years ago. I sold it to a friend who still drive it to this day. 🙂

  15. my 99 civic has 315k on the original d16y8 and automatic transmission. It did have a headmaster issue a few years ago i did deck the head and good as new. Last year I put rod and main bearings fir peace of mind! I always check the oil weekly and change oil every 3500 miles

Ugh, you made me realize what I’m in for at some point as far as the oil pump goes, I have a 00’ Civic EX w/ 260k and I’m about to have to replace the original clutch and rear main seal while I’m in there; I’m already hating this job and when the oil pump goes, life will suck! But I still love working on my Honda’s after working on them the last 17 years.
