  1. That machine shop heard BMW I8 and just didn’t want to get involved. He stopped at .005”. There is no problem with taking .010” off a head. Typical piston to valve clearance is at least .080-.100” so you aren’t going to crash the valves into the heads, and while the cam timing will be altered, it won’t be by more than a few degrees, which the computer and the variable valve timing system can easily compensate for, and even if it couldn’t, you could degree the cams by filing away some of the keyway to be able to adjust it back into spec.

  4. so non car mechanic question. would it have been possible to have machined the head and block down then used some sort of a shaped plate as say a shim to equal the original manufactured tolerance on piston travel distance? why or why not.

  5. another often overlooked issue with warped head id the the bottom surface isn't the only dimension that changes. The cam journals are line bored as a set, when the heat warps the head it also moves the cam journal out of alignment slightly and those should also be checked for alignment if the warpage is significant. Saw this a in 90s Honda engines and larger straight 6 like the RB or 2J that were ran too hot.

  6. Don't be a fool like so many guys that think downshifting an engine with the rpms low to engine brake is cool. That's the biggest head gasket blower anywhere. It's common to have different head gasket thicknesses. Just shave the head. Make sure you get some rpms up before letting out the clutch downshifting.

  7. This is a rare car, you know almost certainly someone will still be driving it in 50 years time, so following that line of logic it's probably not going to be with this engine, my point is someone at some point in the future is going to bite the bullet and replace the engine. Just look at how much the original M1 is going for, I mean the 70's sports car here, and that'll give you an idea of what these will be worth in 10-15 or 20 years time.
