To say General Motors goes through a lot of tires would be an understatement. It buys around 49 million a year. So in an effort to be more sustainable with their products, the automaker wants to shoot for 100% sustainability overall by using natural rubber tires. And its suppliers like Continental, Goodyear, Michelin, and Bridgestone are all on board, according to AutoBlog.
GM claims manufacturers can’t build as good of a tire without using natural rubber even though a smaller ratio has been used over the years so it’s going back to the basics. Why not do something good for the environment, great for your company, and saves a little money all in one? The natural rubber industry produces approximately 12 million tons each year, and 75% is used in the tire industry. GM is hoping their goal of 100% sustainability will make an impact and hopefully have other companies, automotive or not, following behind them.
