Once again I team up with BBB Industries to bring you the basic steps in starter diagnosis. If you suspect a bad starter you might want to run through these checks before you commit to get a new one, you just may find that you don’t need a starter but rather some other issue is causing the no start.

Ive got alot of great tips from Eric over the years, he knows his stuff and Im a mechanic myself.
Is a slow crank a starter issue?
VATS for the 90's Chevroley is easy. Ohm meter and measure the resistance on the chip that's made into your key. (The black square) Once you have your resistance number you go buy resistors to equal the keys resistance. Pop the knee plate off that's fastened below the steering wheel. There is a two wire connector mounted to the column. Disconnect and solder your resistors to the side that runs down. If you mount to the side going to the steering wheel you are wasting time
got a 2000chevy with a 4.3 put a new battery an starter it just clicks with starter bolt tie lucen bolts up an starter will spend going to try shiming
I left the key in the ignition in the ON position overnight. The car (69 Camaro) was running fine prior to that. Thinking I drained the battery completely, I hooked up my 4 AMP trickle charger to the battery. After 24 hours, the battery shows 13 volts, and there is current to the horn relay, horn works. However, nothing else works, doesn't seem to be any current at the fuse box in the 12v HOT position. So no dash lights, no gauges working, no headlights… but the horn works. I checked and there is current at the Alternator main post as well. When I reconnected battery from the charger to the terminals, it sounds like a whirring sound is coming from the starter? When I turn the key to the ON position, the GEN light flickers for a second or two. Does this sound like a starter or solenoid gone bad? TIA for any/all advice on getting it going again.-Mike
Baterries do go dry make sure theres fluids distilled is what they ask for but u can fix batteries most the time
Car has sat for a 5day hospital visit I discomnected bluetooth, 2 day non start it kept clicking of.course down to 1 click I waited hours. 07 TL S. Love your Acura Homda video's
Thanks for not talking as fast as a used care salesman on a TV ad. Good video. I would add one thing at the very beginning. It can save a lot of time and worry AND money! Simply short the negative battery lug to the frame or engine block with a jumper cable. Try a start. If that works, problem found. If that doesn't work use a jumper lead to connect the positive terminal directly to the starter and give it a try. If it works , problem found. Then do both at the same time. If that works , then both cables are bad. Easy to do before spending a bunch of money and time repairing or replacing whats not broken.
Eric, why when the battery is week we often hear a stutter clicking noise. Is there circuitry that releases the current to the solenoid so we don't fry it or the starter motor?
How about grinding noise ? Do you have any videos ? ðŸ‘ÂÂ🇨🇦
hi eric i like our viedo it was very help fill thanks so much cheers
This video worth waiting all the way through! @12:39 is another reason Eric is deserves praise. Please appreciate experience. Thank you, Eric, and Happy Birthday!
Eric.. Your videos provide more balance than a mechanic usually gives in person. Very informative.. simple.. easy to understand… humble in a sense that u dont always use mechanic jargon.. and all combined with a splash of humor. KEEP IT UP.. NEED TO BE ON A TV NETWORK
The problem is with me. I changed the flywheel (not actually the trouble maker) with a new one BUT DUNNO how to torque or not properly applied or the bearing is not properly positioned). I guess I have to open the transmission again and check. I have hard time rotating the engine by hand sometimes. The last part of the video I guess tells me my problem. Thanks a many.
How can I get a t 👕 with your autograph
“Turn the key and the engine turns over, don’t even consider it to be a starter issueâ€ÂÂ. DANGER WILL ROBINSON! “ we have someone who doesn’t know what the hell he’s saying!
Great video. Answered all my questions and showed me what I needed to know to make the correct diagnosis.
5:52 12.4V he meant, not 12.6V
What if it is intermittent? My car starts up no problem 95% of the time. The other 5% just click sound. Then the next day it's fine again. It has a brand new battery.
Hi Eric, I have a 2013 Honda Accord v6 push button start (keyless). When I put foot on brake & push the start button with car in park I hear 1 click inside the starter but no crank. When I pull the solenoid control wire like you did & put positive lead in it with negative lead on neg. battery terminal I see 12volts for a split second then back to zero volts. My question is should that 12v stay solid after pushing the keyless push button start? I am trying to diagnose on why it takes multiple push button attempts to get my 2013 Honda Accord V6 to crank over by starter. I see many people owning 2013-17 Honda Accords complaining about this. I see that in 2013 Honda put the starter solenoid inside the starter housing instead of having a separate external mounted starter solenoid prior to 2013. Thank you for providing any info that can help me or others. Happy Holidays & Stay Safe!
Haa thanks bro u saved me woooo! And just to think this was maid 9years ago, It was still helpful now1000%!!🥊🥊💪ðŸÂ½💪ðŸÂ½💪ðŸÂ½

Hello mate just one question please.
So I try to start my ml270cdi 2004 and the starter motor works like 3 or 5seconds and it stop ✋ I was thinking about something electrical I put the diagnosis machine and there no fault code the starter fuse is ok cables as well good condition.
What do you think about it?
Thanks for your help mate
Random no start no crack. Started fine all day. Then tried to go to lowes and nothing. Had the same problem after fishing. Took battery off and it started when I hooked them back up. Now it is not even doing thst.
hi eric i have a problem withe a charged battery my impala starts and runs fine take it for a drive when motors hot turn off go to start battery slow to wind over almost flat when motor cooled down winds over good and car will start is this a bad starter
Thanks for this video. Your comment about the clutch pedal switch being a possibility was exactly what I needed to hear. My 25 year old Prizm had lost the little plastic/rubber cushion on the clutch pedal arm that depresses the switch. The switch would sometimes get depressed by the little metal bracket that holds the cushion, if I pushed down on the clutch pedal with a little bit of a sideways force without realizing it. Usually, though, the switch would not be depressed because there was no cushion to push on it. This intermittent starting failure was puzzling, but you video helped me figure it out. No major problem at all. Nothing electrical, just a missing piece of rubber on the pedal.
9:20 begins voltage drop test
My started developed the classic 'Click no start'', I got the starter out and proceeded with the bench test, TEST 1, Negative to the case and positive to the positive terminal 1 on the starter, Result Solenoid works and motor does not spin, TEST 2, Negative to the case and positive terminal 2 on the starter, Result Starter works perfectly and so does the solenoid when power is supplied to the signal post, What could be the issue ? is it the armature , solenoid, Bendix or the brushes. I was told if the armature is shorted , it would never spin.
Hi Eric, A few days ago I,v started to have this problem where I star my pickup truck and then I started a few more times it clicks and then It starts. Could that be the alternarter failing.
can you show us how to bypass anti-theft system for cars 20 years old that wouldnt be stolen
Hi guys i have a little problem with my nipondenso, when i test it outside the car the bendix spin but it doesn't do it clean, i have a video if you want to see it, can you give me a hand? It will be great i am traveling in my toyota and im doing mi self! Tank
With this video, you just saved a lot of auto stores the headache of people returning starters that were installed then returned or returned as defective when the starter was fine all along.
I got a Chevy 454 in my motorhome I don't even turn the key on I just put the positive cable on the battery and it starts making the starter spin with the key off but doesn't engage even if I turn the key on it doesn't engage or do anything but the lights up the dash just starts spitting
Smart man thanks and greetings for you from Iraq
Thanks again Eric. If I can find one of your videos for my problem I know I'm good!
I've watched your video start – finish… I've got to go and start working on my truck now! Thank You for educating me! I now have a truck that I can "Hopefully" work on and be effective!
Great video! We replaced our starter but when we went to connect to battery it cranked without the key turned in the ignition. What in the world could be the problem? Any Ideas? Is it the starter relay> Have not tested it yet but we will when we have a chance to do so.
My Saturn starts but my battery is getting drained. I changed the alternator and still doing the same thing. Why is this happening?
EXLENT VIDEO /COMMENT FROM BABUR EJAZ SAYS IT ALL YOU ARE A GREAT TEACHER . YOU ARE MY GO TO GUY FROM NOW ON.THANKS.
90s v batt systems are fairly ez to bypass.
Eric! You make this very easy to follow and understand. With really clear shots of what I can expect to see and how to interpret the information!
I was looking for something to send a friend so they could avoid unnecessarily replacing a starter.
Thanks!
Hey! U r good with explaining the do's and don't of testing your starter. So u have a new follower. LOL…STAY DIRTY
