This is my second attempt to clean a catalytic converter, this time with soap and water. I’ve heard this method can work so I thought I would give it a try. One that that’s important with these techniques is to do the procedure properly. On both my first attempt with this one and my last attempt with lacquer thinner, I didn’t do the procedure properly and as a result I was not successful. I speak to those points in the video. So, if you have a catalytic converter code and it’s not all broken up inside, you might consider trying this technique. You really don’t have anything to loose if you do.

  1. How are you a mechanic if you can't follow instructions for jack shit!!! First the thinner and now this??? Then you change the instructions and are upset because you don't get the results??? You need to learn to follow instructions.

  2. Use HALF A CUP OF BLEACH WITH WASHNG UP LIQUID WHEN YOU CLEANED IT & DRIED THE CAT YOU SHOULD HAVE USED AN AIR DRYER ON FULL HEAT TO DRY IT FULLY. NEXT TIME YOU'LL KNOW.

  3. You should use hot water to start with. When I clean stuck on food and grease on my pots and pans I use hot water because cold water just doesn’t work very well.

  4. I have a 97 XJ (California) which always passed smog and the last test was the best one yet. The rest of the exhaust does need work and in doing so the catalytic converter will be out. I think I’m going to use the Dawn, it doesn’t need it but if this will extend the life of the unit it’s worth a shot. Guess I will have to get some Lawrence Welk tapes from eBay and play when when I do first drive it.

  5. How come you didn't blow any compressed air in it to peel off whatever gunk or build up in the cat can you try that see if that will work please Eric

  6. Saw your website.. & was fascinated with valuable & well documented information.. Didn't know u had utube.. & here iam..
I have 03 ls43 with 208k miles. Makes Sulphur /match stick burning smell on hard acceleration. Need your suggestion

  7. It is helpful to use HOT Water and to keep it hot while it is soaking……. It the same as with cleaning carbs if you have ever used an Ultra Sonic Cleaner….. "Supposedly" every 7 Degrees Fahrenheit raise in Temperature "Doubles" the speed of a chemical reaction as a "Rule of Thumb"………Cleaning with the "Soap "is a "Chemical" Process here….. It may still have not made a difference in this case, but you can be more "assured" that you cleaned it the best that you could, given that particular "chemical" – here being Dawn Soap.

  8. Just thinking out loud: If you're just soaking something, not removing the contaminants is like dumping socks in soap and water without scrubbing them and then just let them out to dry before putting them back on your feet. Dirt is still there. Yes, it smells nice bur…..you know what I meant. Does that make sense?

  9. why didnt you rinse it just curios you didnt rinse it both times idk just wondering i dont get why you dont rinse it its like with anything you wash something you rinse it …

  10. Scotty said: let it soak overnight, all of you missed this.
Eric, you are doing great work in your channel and I'd suggest you stop bringing others' names or trying to debunk other people, you seem such a nice person and your channel is such a great. I SUPPORT YOUR CHANNEL

  11. In Pakistan it get super Cleaned Just in 40 50 cents and donnu if it gets hurt or not but i think i doesn't look like it got hurt

  12. Nice to hear you collaborating with Scotty. A few of you guys are very good and it's good to acknowledge and coordinate with others, instead of trying to bash each other, like the rest of the world does. I learned early not to badmouth competition. but I figured those days are over in this current dog eat dog world. I may try this as I just got that code, just before getting smog. Of course I always DIY but asked a shop for diagnostic and was just told, '95% it just needs new converter', so I asked to diagnose vacuum leak, sensor or converter…'let me know if you want it replaced.'….ugh. I'm going to try this cleaning but a better idea might be some degreaser I use. I've cleaned oil, engine compartment, engine pieces, it's amazing and probably more like the chemical they now sell for this (CRC, etc.).

  13. My cat is smoking like crazy.
All I did was change the oil pan gasket.
Could it be smoking from all the oil that got on it? If so, how would I clean the outside of it?

    Thanks in advance..

  14. I really think you’re not very bright did you think about rinsing the thing first. 😂😂😂

  15. Dawn is my go to when it comes to cleaning my hands after working on anything car related.
An oddity is, doing an engine swap on a Chevy 350 with a broken block in the middle of -14F weather. A nose having clear, runny snot, works just as well. If I knew chemistry well. I'd be able to figure out the compounds between the two that work so well.

  16. this guys an idiot. soaking wont do much of anything it needs forced solution thru the honeycomb. we dont put dirty laundry in still water w/ soap & call it a fucking day.

  17. What aboit 1 gallon of lacquer thinner as preventative maintenance
. I have zero check engine light indicator.
I don't believe in soap and water!

My catalytic converter still on manifold.

  18. Did this using wife semi defunct dishwasher [did purchase her a new one ] and use max intense wash cycle with 15% ammonia cleaner/+non foaming detergent,,,,,With few mod to baskets to funnel water to run down inside Cat it worked well. manage to wash three cats,,,, before dishwasher took umbrage and died seem seals in dishwasher don't take kindly to carbon and gunk pumping around in hot 15% ammonia/soap You need max run from dishwasher ,,,and must funnel hot mix in to cat core and place a metal fine filter over top of dishwasher filter out let at bottom of machine, ++ rinse Cat well at end of washing cycle with cold water to make sure soap is remove , Still in use same Cat on my Suzuki car and its 24yrs old and it still works fine, Yea we had Cats in cars back in 1993 think hot water is key to cleaning Cat core and keeping it on the move to take gunk away found lot of tiny hard black soot crystals in the run off from waste water ????? know its hard as I use some of the runoff gunk in water to sharpen a Stanley knife blade and still have some of run off carbon and rust as power after it dried and put in a tin,, makes good grinding compound is very fine ,
