This video is actually a continuation of ‘Solving Engine Performance Issues’, as some of you may know my Subaru has had a problem with hesitation from a stop and I’ve been trying to track down the source. I feel I’ve ruled out an engine performance issue so I decided to try and change the transmission fluid and filter as well as the front and rear differential fluids to see if there was a change to the issue, if you watch the video you’ll see if there was.   1. I think I messed up !!!! So question for you, I have a weird sound from the sump now, like air being drawn through . I now know I forgot to put that bloody o ring on the new filter . Do you think this could be the issue

  2. Hi Eric, i have forester 2001 and the auto trans gearbox oil has not been changed.
    is the black engine oil filter the same for the auto gearbox filter. thanks lenniecan

  3. im guessing its not a good idea to change the fluid because all that sludge from the fluid breaking down will introduce gunk to the entire transmission and cause multiple problems?

  4. i had the same issue with my Subaru Impreza 2003 non turbo,, it ended up being the spark plug leads, after replacing the leads it was cured. Did you ever find the fault ?

    I had a similar issues on 2001 Nissan Maxima with 202k miles. Car wouldn’t shift right and was shifting at 4K rpm for all gears. P0744 CEL
    As a last resort, I said to myself what else do I have to lose it is already broken. So I did a drain and fill with Valvoline max life synthetic ATF and Lucus . It was a lot better after. But still not right. I also cleared CEL
    It came back in 70 miles same code
    Continued to drive as it was a lot better
    After 330 miles it was about 70% better
    After 600 miles it was about 80% better
    After 900 miles it was almost normal
    I then reset the CEL. The code P0744 kept on coming back every few weeks. Continued to drive it and clear codes. As it got better the more it was driven. Then I look at fluid and it will dirty already. So decided to change fluid again to get more of the old fluid out. Now, So far, no longer having shifting issues or delayed shifting or shutter when starting from a complete stop. Only time will tell

    Yah Lucus and Valvoline max life synthetic atf. If this works out it’s basically saved the car. The car is my son’s car now but thru this he has seen first hand how learning some basic mechanic repair skills can really save you $$$.

  6. My 2003 Civic Lx ATF is low after I changed the fluid. 3 quarter out and 3 in. I drove for about 60 miles and just checked the fluid after the engine off for couple of hours and the fluid level is low. Why is that. There is no sign of any leak whatsoever.

  7. Question. I have an L460E transmission in a GMC. There is the rubber grommet around the dipstick tube and a quarter size piece of it fell into the transmission. Should I pull the pan to get it out. I know it wont melt or anything since its made to seal the fluid. Found it when my transmission was leaking while parked sideways on a hill.

  8. thank you for posting this. My 98 Subaru Legacy looked identical, even the same pink gunk melted to the pan. Strangely, the Haynes repair manual mentions nothing about this procedure. I wonder what else it's missing? Also. I wasn't able to use the swivel head on my socket but a screwdriver worked just fine.
