I know it’s been a long time coming, but Barbara has finally gotten her van back. After replacing the transmission, radiator, front transmission mount, AC compressor, front brakes, front struts, wheel cylinders, reconditioning the headlights, repairing the rear window wing motors, fixing the suspension noise, freeing up the lock cylinder, an oil change, and replacing the battery, this van should be good to go. At least I hope so.

Barbara was very happy with her van. Yes, the brakes were a bit squishy, but I addressed that issue in another video where I bled the brakes. I did not give the van back to her with unsafe brakes.

This concludes the first of the Fixing it Forward series. I’m already on the lookout for the next recipient of the project. Look for those episodes to be coming out soon.

  1. I'm a little puzzled why someone (not necessarily the mechanic in this case) would want to go through all this trouble to repair an older late 90's van—a Chrysler of course). I know that in terms of dollars, its "cheaper" but is it really cheaper in the longer time (1-2+ years). Yes the transmission has a warranty (probably 2-3 years) but between that, the AC issue, among other things, that's sort of a lot of money to put into one of these. I'm just assuming based on what I know people charge for parts (such as a transmission) and labor. I mean a transmission job alone can be $2000-3000. And I'm assuming that this video was probably made in late 2014 or early 2015, which means the van probably 15+ years old. IDK. If it was me, I would have just sold the thing, taken any loss on it, and bought something other than a Chrysler the next time around. I'm not saying that good work wasn't done here, but that it's a lot of money for an older van that may not turn out to be worth it later on.

  2. if someone dose good for a person good things will come back to them
i have fixed many stuff for people it dose not matter what color they are or disability's they may have
if i am not sure about something that i am work on i will honest to that person
honesty will make life a lot easer i have always fix someone car or truck for free because they did not have the money to pay me or parts so i said its ok because they was grateful that i fixed what i was work on it i was happy to see happiness for them . Fixing it Forward is great thing for some people

  3. Eric, why don't you think about moving to Idaho. You have a customer waiting if you do. Good car guys are hard to find.

  4. Eric, Just watched this. Thank you for sharing the info as well as being a stand up mechanic.
Question though, While you were out driving with Barbara, I noticed a left right strobe effect on the instrument cluster gear shift indicator lights. This can't be normal, so I'm wondering if it was a result of the the video camera, or maybe the cluster gremlins.
Im curious what you think. Was it a real problem, or just a video artifact.

  5. 😢👍👍👍

  6. SHE ACTS LIKE SHE'S MISS KNOW IT ALL & SHE NEEDS TO APPRECIATE ALL THE FREE WORK & PARTS INSTEAD OF WANTING HER CRAPPIE BROKEN PARTS BACK !!!

  7. All in all, I don't get why people keep saying that Barbara " wasn't as grateful as the other participants of FIF "… Every person has his unique way of showing gratitude… some are more extravagant, and some are more reserved in showing emotions. 🙂

  8. Eric I live in my van and in need of repairs to keep it going longer if I left the DC area and came to your shop would you help me with it ? but also let me work alongside you ? I love working on my van just can't afford to get parts or use of special tools please let me know what you think ?
