Another American town is enforcing insane rules. Similar to the California town that fined people for keeping garage doors closed and the New Jersey town that fined non-residents for driving through, West Memphis, Arkansas is banning people from having inoperable cars on their property.

The reason? Local news Fox 13 reports because Ordinance 1298 says they’re “unsightly”. The term inoperable is defined as any car that doesn’t have current plates, cannot be legally operated on the streets, or have the wheels removed. Violators will be fined anywhere from $250 to $1,000. Do think this helps keep neighborhoods look nice or is it too invasive?

  1. I live in an area that has about the same regulations. It makes it really hard to be someone who works on their own things. Everyone is so worried about their property values. Is it really so bad if I have a vehicle I'm working on? Maybe those who are so again it could give me money so I wouldn't have to fix my own things.

  2. I think they should be issued a fine subject to waiver if they provide proof that they have covered their vehicle with conservative (non-obtrusive) good condition vehicle cover. If they are caught a second/third/etc time with the cover off while not directly interacting with the vehicle then the penalties should progressively increase.

You shouldn't have to put up with neighbors' property looking like a dump, but at the same time they should be allowed to keep such vehicles so long as their decrepit nature is concealed.

  3. What you do on your own properly is fine so long as it doesn't affect others. If I can't sell my house because your yard looks like a salvage yard, then we have a problem. If the condition of your properly lowers the values of the other houses in the neighborhood, then there is a problem that needs to be addressed. I pay tax. I expect people to take care of their shit in my neighborhood. It's common courtesy- which unfortunately, it's so common anymore.

  4. Too far for sure! I pay taxes on my home I own and if I want a inoperable vehicle to take parts off of to use to fix that same daily driven car, then they have to deal with it.

  5. I don't see any problems with that. Where I come from it's not uncommon to see people with 5-10 cars in their yard they'll 'fix up eventually'.
Uhh… there's a tree growing through where the engine was (True story).
