Here’s part 2 of the Cavalier water pump replacement, this one has how to bleed the system out which is something I haven’t shown on this type of system with an expansion tank before, it’s a little different and I have some issues but I show how I solve them so if nothing else you can use this as a reference on how to bleed the air out of this type of system.

Aww man I need to replace the water pump, but looks pretty hard to do? 😬 Do you have to removed all those parts out from the car to put the water pump?
If I didnt tighten those bolts for the water pump correctly could this cause pulley misalignment? I have a squeal when I first start the vehicle and disappears when I am driving.

nice video i have a question. This overflow tank has the hose near the cap and its open. you think the water steam will go through thee pipe and even coolant?
This was a great to-the-point walkthrough of changing a water pump. My wife had the old 2.2 so this video was perfect. Brother-in-law and I knocked it out in 3 hours. The only troublesome part was cleaning the old caked on gasket. That was a challenge. I would recommend moving the alternator aside (as Eric said). Makes access to clean up the old gasket 10x easier. Thanks Eric.

Use a AC water pump, a friend of mine used an aftermarket water pump and it only lasted two years. Also on his 2001 there was a bleeder valve in the heater core line to get rid of any trapped air.
The best way to bleed this if you don’t have bleed screws is to put a gallon of mixture in the expansion and drive it around a little until the fans kicks on. It’s gonna come out of the reservoir and the temp will get a little high but it’ll force the air out and force the fans on or you’re gonna be sitting there alllll day waiting

Good instructional, Eric. I did this job and was a piece of cake. Only needed to take off alternator and pulley off. No seized bolts. YAY. Never happens like that! If you push down on the tensioner with a bar ( I used broomstick), the belt slips back over alternator no issues! The best part is that a new water pump is $50 CDN at Canadian Tire or Lordco. 🙂

Oh i'm in trouble, with my mercedes w201 1993 2.0 diesel.
I putted in a new calorstat thermostat, and pour in some water in the expansion tank, and it started bubbling and showing some yellowish creme, and when i revved up, it caused the water to come out from the expansion tank.
Can this be caused, due to a poor air bleeding procedure?
The thermostat seems to open, i noticed a temperature drop around the temp the thermostat had engraved on itself, but the fan was never switched on.
As i went on a drive, it never over heated, at least according to the temperature gauge.
Should i try revv it up, to make all the air come out through the expansion tank or?
One mechanic said it had blown head gasket, which i doubt it, since in the summer, i never had problems.
And the other, noticed a bit of pressure on some tube.
Is this system somewhat self bleeding
I also saw another video about how the heater core hoses are an integral part of the cooling system rather than a mere take-off from the main cooling system. They were plugged up obviously with poor cooling system maintenance. I’ve always kept fresh coolant, max 3 years old, in the cavalier but am now for the past 30;000 miles getting overheating problems… is it possible a heater core could restrict overall coolant flow in this model ? That would be a major mistake on the cooling system design to my way of thinking

I’ve done this water pump replacement twice on a cavalier now with 235000 miles. I did it thru the right front wheel well both times. Honestly I don’t know which would be easier so I’m trying from the top down as in this video in a couple weeks. I’ve already replaced that engine mount with a urethane aftermarket part so I know the mount as well.

Man wish i saw your vid before i hired a street mechanic to do mine, totaled it he came from under it and didnt support the motor and messed with the timing ended up having to have it junked for $300👎ðŸÂ»
