If you have a problem with your hood not closing on your 1990-2001 Acura Integra or Honda Civic, this video will help. It will also work for most other Hondas and Acura’s as well as most of them use this type of set up.
Many times the problem is in the latch assembly, for me it was the cable that was the problem. Either way, this video shows how to repair both issues. Since the Honda Civic is on the same platform as the Acura Integra, the procedures are virtually identical.
Rusty latches can be reconditioned. If I get another one in the shop I’ll demonstrate that procedure. If you wish to recondition a rusty latch, I’d recommend sand blasting and then lubricating with lithium grease when you’re done.

sir! I have 2005 Acura EL – hood stuck closed!! any idea how to get it opened. Thanks much
What if I have no spring at all??? 2000 Acura integra Ls
SO my Dad recently hit a deer. So we went to the Junkyard and we were able to aquire a 1999(?) Acura 2.3cl to replace the messed up hood on his Acura 2.2cl. Now i could not find dimensions for the hood itself, so I went by the dimensions on the specs page of both cars. now the #s were identical.. but the hood wont latch… im struggling to find help for this specific problem.. I think the latch needs to be adjusted… will an egine hood from a 2.3cl fit a 2.2 cl?
Best Video
Thanks Eric for the video! I followed your steps and performed the cable replacement on my 2000 Civic. Another step I added was taping a wire to the old cable before pulling it then taping the new cable to the same wire so I could easily pull the new cable back through the correct path. I did not bother removing the cruise control module but worked around it by feel.
Great job. Thank you for sharing. I have 97 Integra with the same problem.
I was wondering, I cut a small hole in my hood to access my hood latch on my 1990 integra but the locking latch(not the secondary) will not move as much as I try. Any tips before I cut the hood off?
I just replaced my radiator in 2002 civic 1.7 and took off the hood latch, when I put it back, the cable wasn't in properly, now I cannot open hood…. what can I do to open this?? and then I can reinstall the latch properly
I couldn t open the hood! sad
No need to remove the latch. Just spray the whole latch with WD40 and let it sit. Problem solved.
I'm so glad you exist
I've watched about 3-4 vids before I found this one – this is the most comprehensive/detailed/helpful. Most others just say 'you'll need to pry out some clips' etc, but you actually show the clips, how to pry them out and… where they are etc. You also show the part numbers so they are easy to order online etc. Thank you so much. I'll be changing mine out this weekend!
Great video thanks!
Hello! Honda Civic 6 generation England, there is a video
Good work car guy
Men..!! at least clean and Lube that Latch mechanism very unprofessional..!!
Dude you are the best, looks like I'll be replacing my cable soon!
Thanks for the great video man. I just bought a 98 Integra for my step daughter. The hood didn't stay shut. They replaced the latch and the hood would then close but the cable was sticking so I had to manually push it back before shutting the hood. I watched your video and replaced the cable with the Honda link in your description for $42 with shipping. Just replaced the cable assembly and works like new. Your video made things so much easier. Thanks again 💪🇺🇸
Thank you for an informative, useful video without a bunch of fumpfering around. Having a functioning hood latch again is wonderful!
Muy buen trabajo, very good video,I am going to start mine.Thanks.
Worked like a charm. Thanks!
Same car, same collision, same issue. Thanks Eric. One of the quickest fixes yet.
Just had to add a new handle inside, as that was broken off, too (actually wasn't hard. Just used a door hinge and bolted a handle to the screwholes, replaced the pin and bolted through the pin holes to fix it in the place the old handle used to be.)

This video is Gold. Thanks brother. I was ready to take off the fender and front bumper until this video. Also the antenna and rear latch videos are gold aswell. Thanks for sharing. Eric. ðŸ‘ÂÂ
Could this also be why there is a larger than normal gap between the hood and grill of my 2000 civic si?
I was attempting the spring move down but I tried before even watching this video and I managed to take off the spring any help?
Great Video Eric, now I can do it myself. Thumbs up buddy.
Is this also apply to acura dmx hood problem?
Amazing!
Thanks for the video!!! This is the whole fix, it don't get no better. My Job to do today and you have me ready to do it. Thanks again!!!
I just pull the cable that connects to the spring, up, with my index finger, each time I want to close. Let's me know is mechanic or someones (who doesn't know how to close) meddled in the engine bay.
Eric.
Thanks once again, you've made my Integra ownership far cheaper for me! Had it 9 years now, followed your videos since I found them 🙂
do a 1986 nissan hb truck. needed a good close look at inside handle to see if it could be adjusted.
Thank you so much for making this video, really helped. ðŸ‘ÂÂ
I’m sure you know this by now, but thank you for sharing everything you know and helping people all over the country with your videos. That was a simple solution, but I wouldn’t have know without your video. Thank you!
I have the opposite problem with a 99 civic. My hood latch and cable work, the plastic handle under the dash broke off. I was hoping I could see if that part is able to be released from the other end of the cable, and if it's available separately. I can get the hood open with a pair of pliers, but it's a pain obviously.
Anyone know why why hood latch locks up, I try to push down but it's like the latch stops completely. Also the car is now very misaligned when it would close the hood would still be somewhat open. There would be a 1 inch gap between the grill and hood and it seems the radiator is curved and wedged in place.
2000 Honda Civic LX
thanks for this. My hood wasn't closing and this made me look one more time at the mechanism. A rubber bolt cover was stuck in the latch and prevented it from going all the way down haha.
Great video. Thank you!
wheres the latch sensor?
I'm about to do this to my 01 accord I didn't check to see if it was the cable I just assumed it was the latch I used could use my finger to push it back now I gotta use a screwdriver but this on a accord is pretty much the same. Good video!
I had this issue on my Integra for the last 7 years or so…always did the screwdriver trick. I'm finally getting around to doing something about it. Like yours, mine was also an issue with friction on the cable, and not the actual hinge/latch. That looked like a pain to replace the cable— so in my case what worked as a quick solution was an adjustment of the position of the latch mechanism. As you alluded to in the video by making markings, there is some play to where you can position the latch, about 1/4 inch in each direction. I loosened the three bolts, and positioned the latch as high up toward the hood as it would go, then tightened the bolts. Locks every time now. Whether it's because this allows the hood hook to push deeper into the latch, or because it changes the angle of the cable, I don't know, but I don't really care as long as it works.
Thanks man you solved the problem
on the honda factory line they use dish soap mixed with water for all rubber grommets and door window seal install. Much cheaper than silicone spray
My Integra has the same problem. Doesn't close all the way when you drop the hood. Looks like I need to replace my cable as well.
Eric, your videos set the standard for DIY car repair. They are always easy to follow, well explained and great video quality . My integra has this exact problem and now I can fix it.Keep up the great work!
mine is having the same problem. all I did was i lift the handle where to pop the hood and I let go of the hood and before it hits my finger. i let go and it shuts.
Cool video! While you were filming under the dash I noticed it looks like your CMC is leaking at the rod boot. Common problem on Civics. Guess its the same with Integras?
Anyone happen to know if the part number of the cable he used is the same for a civic del sol? It looks about the same, but I'd like to be sure it's the right length.
