In this video I show you how to replace the input shaft bearing on a 2005 Honda Civic manual transmission. This information will also apply to older Honda manual transmissions found in Civics an Acura Integras and can serve as a basic guide for rebuilding Honda manual transmissions.
The issue with this transmission was a noise when the engine was running and the transmission was in neutral. The noise also occurred when driving the car and running through the gears. The only time the noise would go away was when the clutch was depressed and the transmission was disengaged from the running engine.

Erik What do you think of the D series engines in overall, i would love to hear your opinion! greetz from the Netherlands:)
Is brian the cameraman not working for you anymore eric?
Advice from someone who just learned the hard way when doing this for the first time to the other people who are teaching themselves how to do this: that weird piece of metal on the top of the input shaft has only ONE way it goes in, and if you’re not doing it right it will completely shatter and it costs like $85 from honda for a new one
OMG, but this is still so much work just for a bearing! I mean, you have to have the transmission taken out, then taken apart, have the bearing replaced, then having it put together and installed into the car again. I am pretty sure that is a several-hundred-Dollar job right there! I would definitely make sense to replaced the clutch as well in case something like that happens with a clutch that is several years old or even the original one from the factory. Still, it's a hell of a job. And finding an honest mechanic you can trust with taking good care of your transmission and not messing something up is yet another thing to consider. But well, the things we wouldn't do for our beloved Hondas! ^_^
I envy this guys garage
You make me miss my 03 civic I sold last summer :'( such a good and trusty little car
I was able to replace the ISB and the two CV axle seals in the transmission of my 2000 Honda Insight due to the detail in this video. Thank you, Eric.
That’s a good video. Thanks. It will help me a lot. I’m about to do this to my Honda Civic 2004
Hey Eric, i have an issue with my 2002 civic ex manual tranny. Its hard to shift to 1st and reverse gear so some reason i have no idea. Its a new clutch and Pressure plate i put in it but i having these issues. U have any idea that should causing the problem?
Sooo I'm pretty sure this is my problem only thing is I dont have the time or place to do it myself im confident I could do it in a couple of days lol but if I keep diving it what's the odds it will go out
Hey Eric! Awesome awesome video, it’s gonna be super helpful! Mine is getting a bit too noisy for my peace of mind, so it’s time to get it out. You replaced your bearing with a genuine one? I fear that it won’t be in stock where I live…
Huge thanks once again!
I was thinking about why the input shaft bearing tends to fail on Honda manuals. I don't think it's a design flaw or bad parts. It's a shaft that sits in a ball bearing. It's not mysterious or complicated from an engineering perspective. I think these bearings fail because manual Honda's tend to see higher than average RPMs, leading to eventual failure.
I have a 2004 Honda Civic ex manual transmission, my 5th gear is not staying in, it pops out when I give it gas.. please advise?
you should paint the transmission outer case. It is the only purpose of fixing transmission on youtube.
Amazing video Eric, very educational. Keep up with videos like this
Hi Eric, been a long time subscriber since like 2009 when first video I saw of yours was "how to plug a tire puncture". Eric would you say replacing the Main Shaft Bearing is a smart move since you're in the box anyway?
Anyone know a reason why the differential won't come out? I replaced my input shaft successfully but i remember i could not simply lift up the dif. I think i missed something.
bruh! integras, civics! this garage is a paradise 😂😂 i loved the video, thx eric. u da car guy
That looks a lot more like an H series transmission than the earlier D series.
I just got a quote from Honda to do this job, and they wanted over $5,000. to do this and mostly aftermarket parts since Honda quit making most of the parts… sure wished I had your tools and lift.
Same thing happened to my 97 civic. Input shaft bearing did the trick. If vice versa with the clutch pedal its probably the throw out bearing. Love working on these civics tons of room under the hood.
I had an 01 EX with a manual transmission. It had the same problem started at about 170 thousand miles.
no wayyyy exactly same as my car … and i might have to change trans. luv ya eric
Far out Eric
How much would that cost if a mechanic or dealership would have fixed it
Eric the car guy.. is really the REAL MECHANIC… detailed and hands on fixing.. unlike other car channels that say HEY GUUUYYYSSSS!! at the beginning
What a great video, thanks Eric
How much on average would a rebuild of a 5 speed transmission cost be?
Thanks man you help me a lot
Is beautiful to see how your installations evolved trough all this time that I follow your channel. I think that you deserve the best!
Vtec in the end?
구ëÂÂ…! 좋아ìšâ€Â!😄
boop
I will subscribe to any Honda Civic Vlogger. Specially this particular model because I have this one.
This is exactly what I was looking for. Awesome!!
of course this video is posted AFTER i had to figure all of this out on my own…. at least i didn’t mess it up 😅
Thanks Erik, it saved me $1,000.00 Same issue with my Civic. Keep up your good work!!!
Very helpful! I just started up my project civic and it hasn't run for a year, now that I ran it, I noticed the identical same noise releasing the clutch although mine is more like a hum! Thanks lots Eric!
Same problem on my 03 dodge Dakota, considering rebuilding it myself
