In this video, I begin to work on my free Turbo Subaru Outback XT and discover that it’s a big money pit. I start taking apart the top of the engine and the turbo to discover why this car was free. It’s a total mess and I’m starting to think these are not the best cars.

Serious question Subaru people. Should I give this car away to a family in need or am I handing them a bill even after fixing what I think is everything? Head to https://keeps.com/legit for 50% off your first order of Keeps hair loss treatment!
I'm from NY so considered rust belt, really disappointed because recently I tried to do a DIY oil change because I know how to do it so why pay for parts and service, but little did I know half the plug for the oil pan had rotted away and rounded as I attempted to get it off. So yes, I am from the rust belt 😂
I know this is a old video and this comment isn't likely to be seen but man this video is just another fine example of how solid a person Alex is. To sink more money into a car than it's worth just so it's safe for someone else is a enormous act of kindness. Love this channel
I'm pretty sure what you vacuumed up was a rat that got in there and drank the coolant, died and rotted in there
I have a 2014 WRX and I just open the hood then close it.
I have always lived in the south and every vehicle I've ever worked on was from the south. Except for one. We had a Z71 Suburban that we bought used when it was about 10 years old. I didn't realize until after we had bought it that the previous owner was from Michigan. I went to replace the hub bearings and ended up standing on a breaker bar with about an 8 foot piece of pipe on it. That was my only vehicle I've ever owned from north of the Ohio River.
Hi Alex. You mentioned and showed a long crank issue with this turbo Subaru and even 6 Star talked about it can be a vacuum leak issue.
What did you end up find out was the problem and could you get yourself or the guys at 6 star to talk through the diagnosis for this. We have a 2003 Liberty GT Wagon 😊 with quad AVCS and automatic that does a similar thing only on cold starts overnight or sit for several hours more than 4-5hours.
My son and I are loving the content especially the C63/E63 and E55.
a silicon hose kit ? cheaper and better than original and will need hose clamps – i replumbed my fuel lines and fuel pressure regulator , after market job .
Im from Ky so i know exactly what u mean about the road salt and snow. IT'S EVIL
Yo alex pls start uploading content for january 2023
Love your videos! One thing I’d recommend is numbering the videos in a series so it’s clear how many and what order they should be watched in.
Do the head gaskets
You are a lovely guy……but please stop this barrage of verbal diarrhea…..edit your comments in your head before informing us of your conclusions!!
BMW owner here and this looks like an actual nightmare
Subaru is 10mm/12mm/14mm/17mm/19mm
Over in the UK we have the rusty nuts and bolts issues as well. Managed to snap a couple of bolts by trying to loosen them.
Love the channel!
Screwbaru..
Have you ever worked on a 1989 Jaguar XJS V12? I would love for your shop to help get it back right.
Detroit, I know exactly what you mean about the salt
New England diy all I know is rust and pain
Since the motor mounts are needing done anyways wouldn't it make everything else youre doing easier if you just took out the engine?
Ah I know the pain! Michigan here!
You should have called it the “Subaru Riseback”.
I love watching you wrench… basically the same way as me, just with way more experience. Chicago also here!
Call this car project "giveback" like Outback, but it relates to the purpose of repairing this vehicle (donation). Also, the original person you tried to donate this Outback to gave it back 😂
I just purchased the same car but fortunately it is just a simple 2.5 non turbo car but it does have a ripped timing belt. I cant wait to pull the engine and take it apart. You can pull these engines in 1.5h which makes work on them much easier.
What we learn:-
It doesn't matter how properly you maintain your Subaru, it will fail
We feel your pain here in Cleveland, Ohio!
Subaru’s don’t look easy to work on …
No gloves but worse, why don't you wear any eye protection? Working under any car is garanteed to rain debris especially when you're banging and prying rusty parts. Just sayin'!
If you had dropped the whole engine and gearbox out in the first place , like the dealers do , your job would have been far faster and easier . Flat engines are a bitch to work on in situe but once out , everything is so much easier .
The reason you will come up with 12 and 11 bolts is because Subaru is part of Toyota , who often have 11 and 12 where it should be 10 & 13 .
This will be a good restore. Looking forward to it.
YOU ARE A VERY GOOD MECHANIC
I'm from Michigan and I can remember when cars would totally rust out in 5 years.
Can you give more up close shots
I would like to learn one reason any one would buy a Subaru?
Awesome work as always 👏
I live in Hammond IN so just a stone's throw from you. And yes, the ensuing rust from the salt is part of of our Chicagoland lives.
Here's your title for this. This is the SubaResurrection.
Scary! Merry Xmas from Essex, England. Keep up the good work!
“As easy as a few drops on your head” Talk about a straight line.lol
