Out of Electric Range and Gas! What happens? Amazing what the Volt does!! – Car Mod Pros Portal

In this video I show you what exactly happens when a Chevy volt not only runs out of its electric range but also runs out of its gasoline backup. Will it damage the battery? Is there a battery reserve? What should you do? Find out here!

  1. Just a word of caution. My 2013 Volt stopped shut off on the freeway with no warning at 70 mles per hour . Almost crashed. . Took it to dealer to repair The diagnose was 2 cells were bad on the main battery. Cost for a battery $26000 plus labor to install and replace the coolant to battery total $29000. I donated the car as it was over double what I paid for the car. You can but hard to find used Volt battery but with no guarantees for about $7000. However you stil have to install for another $3000. So long story short $10000 with no guarantees. Get rid of the Volt beofre you get stuck with a loss as I have. Pass this info to friends.

  2. I just bought a 2012 Volt because I need a gas sipping commuter for work. I have a Yukon XL the guzzles gas and a Harley Road King. I’m loving this thing so far! It has 202,000, but we’ll maintained; I ordered some cool new wheels and tires for it. 😎

  3. Got a built jeep rubicon what is a trailer queen and a 2012 volt i daily to work and pick up the kids…. after 130k miles i finally have decreased battery range but the gas engine is so efficient I keep running it and am not worried about the battery…… I see no reason not to have a daily electric. Heck, I changed my brake pads at 11 years and 110k miles because I felt they were just too old…..

  4. my 2014 Volt got an OnStar message that stated "charging has been interrupted" – I believe this has something to do with the disabling of the OnStar 2G connection – (too bad us US Volt users weren't offered the 4G upgrade the Canadians were offered) – anyway, after that message my car only charges to 24 miles electric – before that it would charge to 34/35 miles…….thoughts?

  5. I believe you did this test backwards and hence came to the incorrect conclusion that GM let you use some of the battery reserve at the bottom of the charge cycle past 0%.

When my 2013 Chevy Volt’s 3 year lease was about to expire, I also did a test.

You thought you ran out the battery when it switched to gasoline mode (as it does every time a Volt driver runs out of electricity), but in this instance, the Volt software switches over before 0, leaving a secondary reserve which is what you accessed when you ran out of gasoline.

    What I did was:

First I ran out the gasoline with electricity still in the battery. One way to do this is in Mountain Mode.

Within a half mile of a local gas station, I started driving in one mile circles using the street and an alley paralleling the street, so that I would never be more than one-half mile from a local gas station.

When I ran out of electricity in the alley, IT JUST STOPPED and a woman nearby helped me push it into a parking space, so that I would not block the alley.

I tried in vain to get access to the reserve to start the Volt and drive over to the gas station.

I then called AAA and they put 1 gallon into it and I drove over to the gas station to fill up, drive home and connect it to my charger.

The true top and bottom reserve GM built into the Volt battery is protection for their 8 year warranty and not for you to use in an “emergency.”

  6. i drive most of a day in sports mode that makes it super snappy between red lights – the only car that gets tesla drivers surprised to see you're still on their tail is volt – everyone else are quarter mile long behind – also we went to racing lanes in Rosemond Race Tracks and when volt in sports mode it actually beats any tesla car except modelx plaid – cause it goes into ludacris mode which beats all cars and not just volts – moreover cops know volts instant acceleration capabilities that beat freeway police cruiser in takeoff so they did complain to GM about it (and as you know GM limited max speed for volts – well not just volts many models are hard limited to 100 mph – and that is not for no reason – especially when police insist on car makers to avoid building any new cars without being able to catch them – so the speed limit was introduced) – ergo my conspiracy theory about why volts were canceled for good – yeah, some folks telling long tales about how expensive the volt's engineering complexity was – but i think they built it for 10 years not because of that but because GM really needed to test the entire constellation of top of the line engineering in a single product plus states were covering the cost of the car for us – but once states stopped helping us to buy this car, GM knew that high cost of volt due to its over the top engineering will not attract enough buyers –

  7. I have a 2020 Jaguar F-Pace SVR and a 2016 Cadillac ELR (which is the Volt hybrid platform). I also have a Range Rover SuperSport (Overfinch), a GMC Yukon, a Nissan 350z and a Mazda CX-3.

Yup. I have too many cars. LOL

  8. I have this car as an Opel Ampera, and I'm very happy with it and I will keep it for a very long time. The designers and engineers were genius. The combination of speed and comfort is still rocking, beating most of the new cars.

  9. I have both a 2007 Prius and a 2013 Volt. The Volt hands down wins with a plug-in feature but by comparison, the Prius is so much more intuitive and comfortable to drive. Chevy tries hard to make electronic controls, door locks, even shifters look 10 years behind the times. Still, I like the driving modes and the electric range.
