I Bought The Best Turbo Diesel Mercedes-Benz Ever Made & So Should You! – Car Mod Pros Portal

I sold my perfect electric car to buy the best turbo diesel car Mercedes-Benz ever made. This car was so great that the U.S. Government wouldn’t allow it to be sold here after just 2 years. What replaced this was the ultimate demise of the diesel passenger car for Mercedes-Benz USA.

  1. All of you saying the om617/602/603/606 engines are superior, I ask you why, other than nostalgia? is it reliability? because the i6 OM648 is every bit as reliable as the previous generations, and doesn't suffer from head gasket issues or early 90's electronics issues as the older IDI engines did. its also more fuel efficient and much more powerful.

i assure you my handle doesn't come from lack of experience.

    Ive owned an 83 om617(T) 300SD, 86 om602(NA) 190D, 91 om602(T) 300D, 99 0m606(T) E300D. i did all my own maintenance on all of them.

I Own a 2005 E320 CDI, I've daily driven the car for the last 3 years and done ALL of my own maintenance.

With the proper tools and the balls to work on the car yourself rather than taking it to the dealership, it is better in nearly every possible way than the previous generation Mercedes Benz diesels.
And that's in no way knocking the older diesels. They all had their place in history and most were innovative technological marvels in their time as well. But when it comes to value, reliability, longevity, ride quality, safety, features, styling, rust prevention, paint quality, it's REALLY hard to beat an om648 E320 CDI.

Now, Cue the naysayers that have never owned or driven a CDI. XD

  2. The Engine immediately prior to that , the OM – 606 , can return the same Fuel Economy , and is ULTRA tuneable .
Also a " Million Mile Engine " , and Mechanically Injected with Electronic Control . VERY Fuel Tolerant and MUCH lower Fuel pressures .

  3. Upwards of 12,000 miles of oil changes 😂. My E270 was serviced every 17,000 miles per the Assyst computer. Was on 240,000 miles last I saw it and still hadn’t needed any maintenance. And that was British miles.
Maybe the US has more emissions kit as it wasn’t a problem in Europe.

  4. Amazing how so many Americans think the ghastly asthmatic and crude 240 and 300D engines were great just because they did a million miles. Problem is, you’re talking from utter ignorance as you never got any of the good Merc diesels. They were awful, gutless noisy lumps. You lived in constant terror of a hill.

The 320 IL6 was a revelation. Fast but horrendous turbo lag. Once found myself off turbo with traffic bearing down on me waiting for the next spurt. Quite scary. The V6 was the first 50mpg diesel that was as smooth as a petrol, progressive power and fast. I drove a few but owned the 5 cylinder 270 which was a brilliant bullet proof lump. I once got 900 miles from a tank. Fast, frugal, endless torque. You really don’t know what you missed. Even the 4 pot 220cdis are a world apart.
These days I have a Jaguar with a V6 diesel. Quiet, smooth and there’s very little that will keep up. A diesel that’s so powerful it’s limited to 155!

  5. I’m sorry but these engine it’s not the best diesel engine , the best is OM606 , the OM648 has to much electronics problems ask any Mercedes mechanics or Mercedes enthusiast that really knows, but you don’t know

  6. I had om611, om612, om613, om648. last 6 years w648 is in my own. car is old 21years and 600.000 km on odometer. It is in great condition, very strong and fast, low consumption fuel. in last 6 years I changed 6 batteries 100Ah, 2 small batteries (12V 12Ah), 1 regler, 1 injector, 1x oil replace in gearbox, 3x AC gas, and 1x SBC ABS. w210 (om613) is better and faster of w211 om648. it was strongest serial diesel car on world (and best) 25 years ago. w210 turbo works with vacoom and w211 turbo with electronic. old school is better.

  7. I agree. The best car I ever owned. Mine was Obsidian Black. I only sold it because of moving overseas. Not so good on starting off on an icy road. The auto wiper tried turning on with a frozen screen too. Quiet, comfortable, fast and economical, what more do you want? This was in the UK

  8. It may be that it is the European Union that decided that diesel cars for adblue function would have limited function if adblue was not added. The purpose was simply to limit Nox from the car. and since California also has strict regulations, maybe they also requested something similar?

  9. That is not the best diesel engine or configurayion Mercedes built. The best diesel engine is the om617 …. The problem with cdi is the engine is very dependant on the xomputer.. for the older om617 is very simple setup. No dependancy on anything electrical.. this is not my oinion. It is a fact of many Mercedes classics owners and master mechanics like Pierre Heidary…

  10. I had the 2003 version of this car in the UK, this was the "Euro 3" spec engine, so this was, as you say before all the extra emissions nonsense was added to the engine.
I have never since up to this day seen another 3+ litre diesel that car get the same mpg as this Euro 3 version could. It's amazing how much less efficient all that emissions junk makes cars.

  11. As a person thats owned many dozens of Mercedes diesels from Pontons to W123 the last 45 years before I was old enough to have a license and still owns the 1960 180Db I bought in 1983 with over 500,000 miles on it I gotta disagree with you on best turbo diesel ever made. The W123 300D holds that honor. And for all the people in the comments saying no, then I guess all the online accolades and books around the world about them and the W123 in general are false compared to the few about these later models. When that E320 has been around 40 years and commands the prices and respect a W123 or even a W115 diesel does then we'll talk. Remember, the W123 300D turbo laid the ground work and set the standards for which you're judging this car by today. Not the other way around.

  12. I have similiar car in Finland. OM648 <3… We have many of these for sale with over 500.000km (310.000miles) driven with original engine without any problems. Ofc there are faults injectors, alternators etc. but these are one of the worlds most reliable diesel engines ever made!

  13. In Europe we have a different option for the 06/07/08/09 we have two further engine choices e280 V6 om642 with 190 hp and 320 cdi v6 224 hp.
The e280 cdi was also offered with a six speed stick shift manual gearbox.
P.S. Why most us w211 don't have the parktronic(parking sensors)?
I mean it wasn't such an expensive option in the first place.
