How to test a fuel pump. Learn how to test your fuel pressure, how to test your fuel pressure regulator, and how to test your fuel pump.
This video will show you how to diagnose your fuel system. If your car is idling or running weird (high idle, low idle, hard to accelerate, studdering, hard to start) then this is one of the first tests you should do. Diagnose high fuel pressure, low fuel pressure, a broken check valve in the fuel pump, broken fuel pressure regulator, or leaking injectors.

  1. Hi Chris. I used your video to do a fuel pressure check with a gauge. Did exactly the way you did it on this video (20 times or more). The gauge did not move much past the 0 psi. The thing is that my 2000 Chevy Suburban 1500 5.3 4wd starts perfectly, and does not die out on me. But I have a service engine light that stays on all the time (flashes). The only error code I have a P0300. I've changed spark plugs (that looked like they have been in the car for the whole 224,000 miles). They were in the worst condition of any spark plugs I've ever changed. I also put new on wires. I have 2 scan tools that give me the P0300, and I scanned it with an Auto Zone scan tool. Their print out said the P0300 code was because of a bad fuel pressure regulator, which I replaced with a new one. I checked it for suction the way you showed on this video. There was some. But to me it didn't seem like there was enough suction. It seems weak to me. I am do a smog and I cannot get that service engine soon light to go away. Could there be a clue in there because of the gauge staying at 0 psi and the pressure regulator having a weak suction?

  2. Hi Chris, excellent as usual video. I did everything as instructed on a very good shape 1992 Buick Lesabre with original 29 year old fuel pump and related parts. I got 40 psi with engine off, key on but the pressure then immediately dropped to 0. Engine still starts no problem and when I did that, pressure went to around 40 with regulator test checking fine and no leaks. When I shut the engine off, the pressure went to 0. I am thinking bad pump but someone suggested that the fuel pressure regulator might be clogged with something. What do you think, any suggestions?

  4. My 99 ford explorer has no pressure at run position, and rock steady 28 psi when running, no clue whats going on, disconnected fuel pressure regulator does nothing

  6. My truck has no pressure with key turned in the ignition, starts up kinda low (40) 5-15 below normal, gains bout 5 PSI with the vacuum line pulled. Drops kinda slow when I shut it off, where do I start? NO LEAKS anywhere in that part of the system.

  8. So whyd he get someone else to remove the regulator vacuum line instead of doing it himself and flipping the pressure gauge back around so he could see it?

  9. I did the test without engine running just with key turn it is at 40 psi it stays at 40 psi when I started engine it goes to 50 psi when I raise rpm it stays at 50 so from what I understand for my 07 Escalade my psi should be at 50 psi and 60 in-between 50-60 psi so I think my pump is bad

  10. Whoa, this may have been the best of your vids for me. Most are good process review for me, but this one had far more educational info than I expected. I hesitantly had a shop do a 'diagnosis', but didn't watch and knew they were just throwing parts (his answer was two unrelated items and dismissed my question of fuel pump), not only do I now know the process, but you answered my two follow up questions, about injector seal and pressure regulator. Now anyone in here knows how to troubleshoot more than most shops (out here at least they just throw parts, it's not their money).

  11. 7:18 I put a new head gasket on my truck and when it was back together I had a leak at my injectors and it had a huge fire thankfully I put it out and its back up and running good now
