The 1972 Chevrolet Chevelle Known as Independence goes under the knife, big time. With some help from a friend Tom, we remove the entire front clip, and the 350 small block chevy, and TH350 transmission. We then threw the 350 on a stand and tore it down far enough to understand why it was running so poorly. I suspected a bad lifter or wiped cam lobe. What was your guess? Watch and see if you’re right!

When Derek yelled WO I LMAO. My brother in law used to do that to me all the time when I was a kid well actually even when I wasn't a kid. So I did it to my kids and now my grandkids. 😅😅😅 Great memories 😂😂😂
A guy decided to rewatch all a fella's vidjeos. 9/22/24.
I had s*** luck only two times where instead of raising it up I lowered it and just popped the ass and out and shook the f*** out of it so I wasn't so high in the air only cuz I was doing some backwoods sketchy s*** you won't even believe what the car was handing it on I'm just saying
Whole bunch more weight reduction on the floor of the garage. That will help offset the extra weight of the big block.
Decoding Cam Numbers
You also may see camshafts referenced with the last few final numbers different from the cam’s official GM part number. For instance, the Duntov cam has a GM part number 3736097 but cast into the camshaft is the number 3736098. It doesn’t indicate a different cam or an earlier or later version. That number is actually the casting number of the camshaft, not the part number. Retired GM employee, John Hinckley, an NCRS Master Judge, explains the one number difference, “Each Chevy camshaft had its own dedicated casting number to minimize the cam-grinding cycle time. When you consider that Flint V8 ground 5,500 cams every day, you can see how important it was to keep track of what you were grinding.”
That's an insanely clean engine for some. I did one that was carboned up so bad that when I took the valve covers off you could barely see the rockers. It was so carboned up that the carbon build up was shiny wher it was rubbing. Also, I knocked an engine over on a 3 point stand one. Never used one of those ever again. It'll wake a feller up.
Frame rail looks sucked in to me. Hard to tell but rarely are they not square. Either in an accident at one pont or the rot is just sucking it in. Still fine though just not likely to align well.
You mentioned you were going to save the air box and A/C components for a Chevelle Wagon coming up. A feller doesn’t recall ever seeing that, and is wondering why
914 liters wow glad you did not drowned …lol.. from canada
rebuild that 350 4 bolt, and hang on to it
A guy should know that cheap cherry pickers equals broken toes.
Work till lunch time then cold snacks and talking bout work is the way of a car guy or gal
👊
Nice work tom
Holy mackerel it's a good rare find!!!! That ol engine is a keeper…. wether you make it a boat anker or a good runner….she's gonna do n be good for something right? Lol anywho great job lil helper….you did all the work!!! Lol nah pretty productive day I'd say y'all work good together in this episode 😁
Well the numbers said it was a truck motor that's probably why it's a for Boulder expected to be under a lot of torque
Is this engine still in stash of engines?
I would give some credit to all the "motor medic stuff" you put in, and drove 600 miles home. Like a washing machine put on the Heavy duty wash cycle. LOL :>) Love your humor! 🤣😂🤣
Derek , another great video with excellent information . As to the Camshaft # 965709 From Chevrolet tech forum :
New member looking for specs / info on a small block chevy camshaft # 965709 , Thank you
Charles Brown
Looks like the specs of the old GM 300hp 350cu in SBC cam. Smooth idle, good torque down low. Not a big rpm horse power cam.
I 454 swapped a 85 squarebody truck and did 2wd to 4wd i love the jack with the arms and I never thought the engine pulling plates were good but u just showed me I always thought a big block would just be to heavy for a carb bracket
If I yank an engine, I'm gonna rebuild it before I put it back in period. No point in half assing it at this point.
My 72’ El Camino’s brother❤

Thx!
