A rev limiter is an engine control device that drops timing automatically to keep the engine from revving too high so he just described the function of an actual rev limiter. The Holley, stock and aftermarket ECUs and standalone rev limiter boxes all do the same thing when they hit their rev limit and run a pre-defined timing map that retards timing to way after TDC (or on some rev limiters, not at all), so it can't make enough power to rev higher. Different rev limiters or a custom timing map can produce more or less flameage at the limit, or probably what your tune guy wants to do is have it ease into the limit so instead of instantly popping and flaming at the set RPM, it quietly falls off power gradually as it gets near the limit. Neither way is easier or harder on the engine, it's all the moving parts spinning and bouncing at that RPM…until they decide not to.

Pro Tip: 5.4 2v ratcheting metal tensioners are a severe improvement over what appears to be the plastic ones in that engine. but maybe I was seeing it wrong.

Is the Ford Modular/Coyote timing setup so weak that timing chains have a shorter life than belts now? Ford's always been a bit behind in the power capabilities but usually the things are built well enough.
Had to do this on my panther chassis, cranked it up and was one tooth off of timing on the left head. Lucked out with no bent valves thankfully. I didn’t know it was recommended to change all the chains and gears and hardware because reuse can cause it to fail

this car gets beat on the most, however this engine seems to be the most reliable. built ford tough! lol. but for real tho this engine sounds super powerful. if i didnt know about ur cars i would bet just by sound that the crown vic was the most horsepower car… (i know leroy is, but thats cuz i watch ur videos)

Set a shift light 500-800 RPM sooner than limiter and try to keep it lit. Rpm range is just a guesstimate. I don't have a shift light currently or i would try it out.
