Ever wonder what happens when you turn the key or push the button on your vehicle to get it to start? This video will not only show you what part is responsible for this modern marvel, but it will also teach you something about the relationship between electricity and magnetism.
So please join me for the next 11min and we will explore the wonders of the starter solenoid.

Fixed my lawnmower with this tutorial. Good job man!
so if im trying to start and its making a turnover noise but not starting, it isn’t a starter solenoid problem right?
This was awesome. Thank you for explaining this with such ease ðŸ‘ÂÂðŸÂ½
I have always wanted to know what the solenoid was. So cool. I wondered what happened when you hit it. Thanks!
my solenoid is working but didn't make a click even with full battery, that is the plunger of the solenoid is just moving when giving current but not plunging fully, i want to know the reason why
Your presentation was outstanding, very easy to understand. Great job!! I am now a subscriber.
Divorced solenoid ? That is a relay,,, or i guess a divorced relay.
The first one you took apart was a Starter Relay, not a true starter solenoid. The Solenoid is the one with the plunger that pulls the starter gears. Relay is purely electrical
Excelente maestro gracias ðŸ‘ÂÂ
Hands down the best video on solenoids on youtube 8|
What is the loud screeching noise when turning the key? It's the same sound when I over turn the key past start position.
I really like these videos of you dissecting parts. I watched you take apart the Honda Odyssey’s p/s rack the other day. My belief is that understanding how it all works aids in the diagnostic process. Thanks for your hard work in making these vids!
If your electromagnet is not working… and you don't hear the click… you are either not getting power to it, have a disconnect somewhere in the coil itself… or just simply lost the ground to it. Some of these solenoids have 2 connecting wires, one from the ignition and the other to a ground, other just ground at the bolts. Drag a multimeter over it.
As soon as you got to the clicking part I clicked like.
Thank you so much,
Great video. So when the S terminal gets 12v to move the plunger it joins the high amp terminals. But what is going on when you hear chatter? What is causing the plunger to bounce up an down? Broken springs?
Would heat (heat soaked) amplify the issues you explained?
Thanks.
You are so great because you put the point across in non-technical manner so we can easily understand. It shows how good and experienced you are in what you do. Excellent job done. Thanks.
Ford Fairmont station wagon..aah. i remember that one.
Hey guy question .well a bad solenoid cause the starter to nut discourage ? and consequently you can shot down the motorcycle ,it sounds like the starter is trying to start the engine.
@0:33: Are you sure they're the same? On combined models, doesn't the solenoid kick out the Bendix/ pinion? E.g., if you bypass the solenoid on a combined model, won't it just spin the pinion in the starter housing?
dude your awesome. I did some work on a starter solenoid and I think it will work great!
Thanks. I like how you explain everything.
thats how i like it, smash it apart so we can see whats goin on in there. great vid Eric guy
