Choose a career in demand. With a viable career, 30,000 or less in debt can be paid off with a Dept of Ed loan with super low interest. Like paying off a car. Just don't borrow from any other loan industry. No Fannie & Freddie, credit cards, banks, etc. Or go for master apprentice/journeyman training in the trades, or find specialty colleges that don't waste your time and money with enrichment classes, but focus on your expertise. California state college system require a lot of wasted time and money on General Ed units. Easily spend a years worth of tuition on stuff you don't need.
