I think the most likely scenario here is that he rounded a corner that had some loose gravel on it, deposited from a prior snowstorm, and the car lost traction for a split second & he over-corrected & filled. I lost a very good friend in Mountain Home Arkansas on a 'dead-man's curve' that way. He's just very luck it didn't eject him & flip on top of him like my friend's truck did to him.
