Ever wonder what grade gasoline should you use in your car (what octane)? Are you paying for premium gas when you can just use regular? Are you using regular and damaging your engine? This video will bust all of the myths and tell you the FACTS on what fuel you should use and why.

Many people throw money away and fill their car with the incorrect fuel every day. Running premium or midgrade in a car designed to run regular is a waste of money and has no HP or MPG benefits. You will not make more power or get better fuel economy running premium fuel if the car manufacturer tunes the car to use regular gas in most cases. I also see some people run regular gas in cars that need premium and the knock sensors have to adjust timing significantly to prevent damaging engine knock. I also hear a lot of people say that premium gasoline has more energy or burns cooler or slower so I will put a rest to all of these “myths” with facts.

  1. I hope you guys like the animations and all the extras that went into this video! It took a while to do (you guys who follow me on Instagram know lol) but I think it is worth showing you examples instead of just taking my word for it! For those asking, here is where I got the fuel injector cleaner/tester: https://amzn.to/31kHwhk

  2. no !! ChrisFix is wrong…
    89 usa octan = 94 euro octane.
    93 usa octan = 98 euro octane..
and we dont have below 95 octane…… and !!! we have 5% ethanol but in this year 2021 we going to have 10% aswell thats not good!!
my bike from 1996 is really not going to like that….

  3. People need to stop comparing Octane and star comparing BRANDS. Mobil 1, Sunoco, Shell. They all offer cleaner fuel than Walmart. There is a reason it's more expensive and I can promise it's not smoke and mirrors. I had an old car and switching from Kroger gas to Mobil 1 improved it's MPG by like 3 miles. Why? Because it has cleaner in it that helps remove deposits of carbon and burn cleaner.

  4. Not only do you not understand octane rating, and its application. You completely disregard the dangers of detonation. When detonation occurs when the flame front strike each other is what causes the knock in an engine. Because those flame fronts are striking each other at a ridiculously high velocity and can cause damage.
You almost got the European fuel rating correct when you cross reference it. Their version of regular is 90 octane by our standard. Their premium is at least 93 if not closer to 95 octane.
I came to a much better understanding of octane several years ago when I arrived at a station when I had about a third of a tank of fuel in my 98 Dodge Caravan 3.8 liter V6. The station had run out of regular and mid-grade. What was allowing people to fill up with premium for the same money. When I did so, that tank of fuel allowed me to get 20.5 miles per gallon in City driving when before I was getting about 16.6 period on the expressway I was getting 31.5 before I was getting about 25 -26.
As it turns out, that I can't waiting also affects the burn rate of the fuel. But because higher compression engines start out at a higher burn rate even with a higher octane fuel it is not any different for a high-compression engine to burn premium gas at the same rate that a lower compression engine Burns lower octane fuel. Which probably explains your confusion. At the time, the difference between regular Fuel and premium fuel was only $0.10 a gallon. The reason for that, is it doesn't cost the fuel industry a single penny more or less to make truck and deliver the fuel in high octane then in low octane. It cost the same amount of money to deliver that fuel because of the way our fuel infrastructure was set up decades ago. This 30 cents a gallon from 87 to 89 and thirty cents a gallon from 89 to 93 octane, is called thievery. But that's another argument. The other issue indicates that when you have a knock sensor it's going to detune the engine to whatever fuel you put into it anyway. But I have done this on a couple of occasions even with my 2003 Jeep Grand Cherokee with a 4.7 and it does get markedly better fuel mileage when I mix the fuel to about 90 to 91 octane. It also tends to run a bit smoother. Whenever I'm towing something I always like to mix at least some premium fuel with the gas. I haven't done it quite enough on this vehicle to find The Sweet Spot like I accidentally found it on my Dodge Caravan. But that is due mainly to the insanely unnecessary price differential that was slowly put into effect.
