I did this job today. I used a brass replacement gear. I did the passenger side where things were reversed a bit from the video. The pin replacement was the toughest part for me. Also getting the old gear out was tricky once into the inside of the motor. There was a spacer between my gear axle and the pin holder. Getting the pin into the holes was really hard. Eventually I simply didn’t use the spacer. I noticed my driver side set up doesn’t have the spacer. It all worked out. Thanks for this great tutorial.
Hey Chris thank you I just finished the first one now I’m on to the second you’re video is very helpful, informative, and thorough. Much appreciated
Thanks for making this video. It really help me fix my headlights and save money.
Awesome job and video…very well done and very informative! 2 weeks ago I was fortunate enough to find a C4 95 Black Vette with 87k miles super clean…never seen rain or snow and I couldn't pass it up I know the car is 26 years old and sooner or later your video will be very helpful for me… where can i get the metal gear for my lights so I can get rid of the plastic gears…?
Hey bud very well done it was a big help
Has anyone had issues with the bushings being slightly too big? I can’t get the piece down because the bushings are just slightly too big. Got them from Midwest corvette. These exact gears.
Chris way is Hummer your favorite
Chris, Brass VS Plastic on the c4 headlight gear replacement….what's your feeling??? Thanks
Chris! I could really use your expertise in my 92 LT1 issue. N.y car sounds like there's a helicopter under the hood when I accelerate. What the heck is it?
Wow Chris, wasn't expecting this when I searched c4 headlight repair. Here I was thinking you were only good for applying soapy wooder and vacuuming floor mats. How about that. : – ) Thanks for this

Ahah! I have a better solution, someone who owned my car before I did cut the wires and taped them to the bottom of the hood…
This is one video that exposes exploded view of pop up head lights mechanism details.
A 15 minute job that is taking 30 minutes…who cares how you lay out the nuts and bolts!!
Youtube is great for this kind of thing but guys like you that take the time to post are the real hero's. Tks man!
You will need a set of hex keys for this vehicle

Hey Chris, couldn't you just take the 3 screws holding the motor cover on and knock the pin out to replace the gear?
I have to repair mine I will let you know how it goes…

For the passenger side on my '91 I had to remove the motor. Tip for getting the armature back in: pull back the brushes and use thread to hold them in place.
I used a ziptie through the hole where the tension pin goes, tied the thread through it, and pulled on the ziptie to create…well, tension. On the other side I did the same with the thread and held it while dropping in the armature.
Dunno if there was a better way to change the gear, but that should be helpful to anyone replacing the brushes!
Thanks for creating this channel.
My 91 C4 needed both sides done.
And had a broken wire to the brights.
Side note:
I believe three pieces of 7/16" diameter nylon rod cut to 3/8" length could replace the bearings if the gear was functional.
Yeah, 1984 is totally different!
This is a great video, you’re really the best at making videos of car content.
I did one light today. Not as quick as you. Some swearing. I will say that whoever designed and built this assembly for GM was not a real good engineer. So many bolts to remove to get at 3 bushings. And hidden bolts behind brackets at that. It was a bit different on an '88 C4 to take the assembly out of the car. My bushings were ground to dust also. I will say to anyone else out there, ditch the pin and replace with a cotter pin. I got the pin out with a nail set punch. I will say I did break a drill bit first and had to then drive that back out. Also did anybody encounter the passenger side motor being different from the driver's side?
Isn’t this use to be red?
Just finished my 1996 Black C4 both sides. Your video encouraged me to do it myself. Thank you. Seems the gear was okay tho. It was the bushings that disintegrated. With I’d bought the plastic gear as original.
Do you understand that the problem wasn't the gear? 🙄
You see the yunk inside the gear, but there aren't any bushings.
I'm pretty sure you only have to replace the bushings. 😉
