This is a followup to a recent video I posted about the engine in #ETCGDadsTruck, a 383 stroker, and the problems it had after it’s initial rebuild. Here’s a link to that video so you can get caught up.
What Happened to #ETCGDadsTruck Engine?: https://youtu.be/RNzrdexY_Hw
As of this posting it’s been about 2 weeks since I repaired the engine and I haven’t experienced any significant issues with the engine other than it’s running too cold, about 150ºF. I’m going to replace the thermostat with a 180ºF unit and recheck that issue in the coming weeks. Otherwise, it runs and drives great. I got my truck back!
Were you right about the issue the engine was having in the last video? If so, LMK in the comments. If not, tell me what you think I got wrong.
This is (Episode 33) in the #ETCGDadsTruck series.

Man this video really made me happy. My engine just decided to start knocking in my first car. Luckily I had already started building a 383 just like yours. Only problem is that I'm a broke high school kid and time and money are the biggest hold backs. Hopefully soon I will have a fresh engine with tbi which will make a huge difference in my 80 camaro.
God that sounds so good! I don’t have a V-8 these days and I miss it!
Yeahhhhh Buddy…old addage…"MOST RELIABLE WAY TO HORSEPOWER IS CUBIC INCHES!"
6:26…thicker gasket set…yup
GORGOUS ENGINE…I REALLY LIKE WHAT YOU DID ON THIS BUILD…SAD COMP WAS WAY TOO HIGH…BURN MARKS ON HEAD AND TAKING OFF THOSE SHARP EDGES IS A BRAVO MOVE…
Eric I love the build. I'm doing a 355 build, pro max heads, forged internals and pro flo 4 intake kit. I'm looking at the same transmission controller you have. Was going from the oem wiring to the stand alone harnesses easy enough? Some days I feel like I'm over my head.
Have you ever used or heard of “Indian hair†? I’ve always had good luck with it. Permetex makes it. (Sure others make it too) how about you? Anyone else had luck, or try it?
This is why you don't zero deck a street engine, don't let the machine shop fool ya, just take enough off to get the deck level that's it
I was told after installing my long tubes to do a post warm retorque on the bolts.. might help the exhaust leak.. otherwise looks and sounds fantastic!
Little bit of clearance is infinitely better than not enough.
Congrats Eric you did it! You know after thinking about your first engine build with the 11:1 static compression, if you had the right cam (bigger) it probably would have lived. I'm surprised you didn't go big block, lot more torque.
I still think it was cheap Chinese pistons and it's Edelbrock not elder Brock come on Eric
Your face at 16:30?
I felt that.
I am going to get my Jeep back – after sensing the joy with you – it's now a must do priority for me
That light piston is going to be a problem later. 1 gram is OK not 10.
Sounds mean what happened with the brakes I had to change the booster on my 95 and now the brakes are horrible
So glad you’ve got it kicking butt not oil…lol. Not real keen on your oil brand especially their additive package.
Yikes NOS on a 2 bolt main???
awesome work eric …..sounds and looks great,….
According to the specs that motor should be it's happiest around 33-34 degrees advanced
I just returned my 10.7 pistons and got 9.8, hoping to hit the low 10s after decking, thanks Eric your the man!
I inherited my fathers 1999 5.7L Vortec 2 Door Tahoe. I want to do this to it so bad now. Thanks
What size cam did you put in this engine?
Make sure your gauges share the exact same ground as to computer or there is going to be a small voltage difference and the gauges will be offset
awesome you fixed the engine ^^ ,but got a question on the ticking noise when you started up the truck…whats causing it??? because that was the same noise i was hearing when you started the engine up the first time ???
LOVE WHAT YOU DID FOR THE GAUGES IN THE TRUCK.
To see the final result was worth the trip. Great engine building experience. Preparing to build a stroker out of my 350ci in 87 vette
I despise exhaust leaks. I've dealt with that crap with virtually every car or truck I've owned at one point or another
It makes me happy… lol
Eric, how much did the exhaust leaks affect the O2 accuracy?
I'm putting a wideband on my carbureted engine for AFR tuning and we all know how difficult it can be to eliminate leaks with headers.
Hey Eric long time watcher first time leaving a comment. Have you dyno the truck and if so what kind of horse power did that engine end up producing?
ðŸ‘ÂÂðŸ‘ÂÂðŸ‘ÂÂðŸ‘ÂÂðŸ‘ÂÂ
Eric, or anyone else wanting to chime in, would you personally still have decked the block if you had it to do over again? I'll be rebuilding a SBC soon and I was thinking about having the block decked but now I'm thinking not to. Thanks! 🙂
Eric, you are a genius! Like your videos with such a great help on almost everything in details. Appreciated!
Do you still have the radio and amp from the truck that you took the dash assy out of ? I need them for my 1990 chevy truck , can I buy them from you ?
There's a cop behind you
thanks for letting me run "shotgun" with you! was a lot of fun!
larry
I use copper exhaust gaskets and header bolt locks. Just like imports you can safely reuse them. I might do a video on my 73 k10. I'm using a fitech set up for fuel injection. Similar problems with the way to high compression.
