Jayce talks about why Smartwatches have yet taken off and become the mainstream craze many expected it would.

What a sexist comment. I am an engineering student and I see more girls with pebble watches etc. than boys
when phones without extended batteries have to be charged 2 or 3 times a day to keep them working how can a watch work when you have to be stuck to a wall?
I don't wear jewelery of any kind, and that includes watches, so these things have zero appeal for me. Your dream of summoning KITT isn't as farfetched as you might think. There are already cars that come when summoned, on private property, so it's only a matter of time before self driving, and self parking and pickups become reality.
I found the best use for my moto 360 was these past few really really cold days. When your outside at night and its -10f you will be very happy you don't have to reach into your pocket for notifications or navigation. Walking directions are seriously underrated on wear.ÂÂÂ
I like that android  authority's videos makes sense. There is not too much like that around the Internet.
The Suunto ambit3 gets the fitness then a smart watch done right.
Would be good while driving. You can have Tasker read your messages out loud if connected to the car. It would be easier to use the smartwatch to reply.. the car's mic doesn't always work well with Google Now.
Of course it depends how often you're in that situation.
smartbands do a better job with the fitness track, the battery last longer and they also give notifications very well, weather, and other features… and most of them are half the price of a smartwatch…  people get smartwatches because…. reasons…
what about the gear s is that ready to launch ?
3:56 Hank Schrader is that you?
not gonna read an entire msg from a watch.. how long do i gotta scroll.. its faster to just grab the phone from my pocket and read it..
I love this guy #FullHomo
Failure on launch. Yes. Not until apple has released their own version of smartwatches. And many many people. Especially on the android side will and will get a smartwatch. Problem is the ff:
– Majority of the smartwatches have 1 size only and no adjustable armband. Just like an ordinary watch.
– NO actual advertisements to any of these products via TV, radio, or a web. A sign of a very poor sale.
– It's main body design is too bulky. And most users have high degree of taste.
– Instead of adding a voice assistant to the watch to provide an easy alert, reply, and notifications. It's more on manual usage.
– Battery life isn't very good. Bluetooth consumes too much battery since it acts as a Bluetooth receiver.
– There are some of the on-the-unit apps that isn't needed by the user such as galleries.
– Needs to give more so that it gives an essence premium quality like having an onboard sensors like barometer, thermometer, compass, heartbeat sensor, fitness sensor, and without depending on the Bluetooth and wifi.
– The actual display should have been atleast 2 inch of display so that it could house more battery capacity and the sensors.
– Will not cost more than $300.
the more i watch your video the more I become to like you. Keep up the good work..
p/s: I'm not even an android user but i like your vids
As a lady with a smart watch, I think one of the biggest reasons we're not seeing this market take off is the limited advertising and marketing. Some people like gadgets, some don't, and I don't think that's a gendered interest. There are other kinds of wearable tech marketed towards women that I can see taking off, like Ringly or Dorothy. I can't imagine a future in tech where I don't have something filling the niche my Moto 360 revealed.
Why oh why did the designers of the Moto 360 cut the bottom off their otherwise beautiful looking smartwatch. I know its a tech thing but my god it f**ks the whole aesthetic up.
This google f**ers do not support language support properly. I am a turkish guy who loves tech and a big fan of android wear. But we dont have any other smartwatches than the shitty Sammys watches. When I saw the first commercial of the lg g3 (which was in turkish) i was really hyped when I saw the g watch would come soon. I thougt when I bought the phone and the g watch come out (apperently did not) I would buy the watch and be cool rollin'. But no! I am still waiting for it. The only thing google has to do is to add some language support. And you have way more customers in Turkey than some other countries like italy and shit. F** you google i want my god damn watch(now i want a moto 360 tho)
hey jayce can i ask a question what is the best case for samsung galaxy s5? if you can read this then thank you.XD
I dont have one yet because they are still too expensive and have crappy battery life.ÂÂÂ
Better battery life, have some sound coming off of it then maybe ill buy a Smartwatch, this time around. Only getting Notifications and Text can get boring very quickly plus with the very high price tag. Is why I haven't gotten one yet.
Good. lol, maybe now the prices will drop and I can pick one up for myself, theyre just too expensive right now but i definitely want one
HAHA I miss kitt!!!
Its because of the battery life and they don't have the hype that apple will create.
there is a KITT smartwatch app? 😀
Actually my Moto360 helps me at work. It notifies me of important things during meetings, for example when a college finishes something in a project, or a new code have been implemented, or just something went wrong. I can easily change the subject with the client without him noticing that I am working with a new information.
One opinion on why smart watches have yet to take off. 1. Apple Watch launch. people are waiting to see if it will be what they want or flop before going somewhere else. 2. A wide variety of smart watches available in store or online, plus demo units to "try before you buy". 3. Watch colors, bands, themes, and watch faces.
Well smartwatches are extremely niche.
I cannot understand why in the world I would ever need to not get my phone out to look at the time, texts or whatever I may be interested in. I can see some people wanting it more for the novelty and cool factor that goes with it, but for me, that's a complete waste of money.ÂÂÂ
Knight Rider was one helluva show
Maybe "Android Wear" should of been somewhere in the title.
everytime i watch you talk about smart watches you never talk about the gear s. may i ask why is that?
you are awesome.ÂÂÂ
Maybe apple watch gives the smartwatch industry a boost?
I really like the watch face in the thumbnail! Any idea where to get it?
Advanced health monitoring would be the single biggest pull for me e.g. blood pressure, blood sugar and much more. Portable devices of this kind are available but to squeeze it into a band, yes please, it's just a matter of time.
Have said many a times this wearables will get the start they need if they are SENSIBLY priced and MARKETED. Hopefully pebble will start doing things rightly since they're the only company that are doing it good enough to attract customers. But unfortunately we Asians don't get the pleasure to use it because of its unavailability in most parts of the world.
As a woman, they don't look good enough for me to wear yet, but who knows, maybe the Apple Watch will change that?
Is your wife's name Rodger?
My only reason why i still did not buy a smart watch is the Expensive price tage in most watchs…i mean i can buy a better nonsmart watch for half the price with a famous mark such as swatch and can live longer without charging
New mobile phones could be arm-mounted, like those "PDAs" in futuristic games and movies.
Here is my opinion. May be a bit long but her goes.
For most products (not all products will fall under this criteria) the products success based on how well the industry can define a product as a "want" or a "need". Now at a basic level, do you "need" any of these products? (smart phones, laptops, tablets, computers, etc) No, no you don't. You can still live your life without having these products available to you. Now take the example of a business man, does he need, say, a smart phone to effectively run a business in today's society? You could easily argue yes. Does the average person need a smart phone to effectively communicate and interact with other people as they do in today's society (social media and all). In most cases you could say yes (obviously laptops and tablets can also do this).ÂÂÂ
Now basically what has happened here is that the industry for smartphones as a whole has created the product such that the product itself has shaped societies ways in such a manner that the product its self in most cases has become a "need". Now obviously the various models of phones and differences in extended functionality (other than calls, internet and that sort of common stuff), comes under the "wants" category and people are free to pick and choose as per their budget and preferences.ÂÂÂ
If you take the close but still different example of laptops, tablets and computers. Are these things (all with fairly similar functionality, but obviously used differently) as a whole a "need" in today society? Yes, for the larger part most people would need one the devices to get any number of things in their day to to day lives sorted (paying bills, online shopping, searching for insurances, studying, yada yada…). But are any one of those products a need by them selves (computers, laptops and tablets)? No, someone may vary well be comfortable with a tablet and not have a need for a laptop/computer. Someone may have a computer, but still need/want a laptop/tablet for on the go work. Someone might have a laptop and "want" a tablet (but not need). Hence, you can see here…that if you took these products as a group, yes almost everyone would need one, but as individuals the product you prefer has both a need and want influence. Now you can compare that back to a smart phone, more people will have a smart phone than a tablet simply because more people can justify needing a smart phone than they do for a tablet. Going further down this chain, gaming consoles. Most people who own gaming consoles have it purely for a want, and thus more people probably own laptops/tablets than they do a gaming console because the industry has made laptop/tablets more of a need than gaming consoles.ÂÂÂ
Now, finally down to smart watches. I personally want a smart watch, i think most of you would happily take and use one provided you were given one for free or cheap (also why some people may not get a tablet or a laptop, because they cant justify the want/need against the price). But, do I need a smart watch? No, other than some extra convenience, smart watches currently are not a need of many people. The industry of wearables as a whole has not yet kicked off as a "need" sort of industry. Will it get there? Yeah, maybe further down the line, but as of right now for most people wearables will be in the want category. This is fine for a lot of products which the price may be more justified for the added value, like a fancy phone case. But for the general population, at least i feel, is firstly, the functionality added from a smart watch is not needed by most and secondly the added functionality for those who may want it is not justified by the price.ÂÂÂ
Anyway, probably didnt need to drag on so much but thats what i think anyway. FEel free to discuss with me if you disagree anywhere. Otherwise, keep up the good stuff @Android AuthorityÂÂÂ
Just waiting for Nokia 3310 smartwatch
I feel like smart watches will start selling more when the Apple Watch is released..
Sorry but soon as I hear your voice I can't watch or listen. Don't take it personal but just not in Android authority voice that I like
I love Knight Rider.
I have the moto360 and I love it.
Actually Android Wear sales are not that bad too. Android Wear launched in June, and they have already sold 720,000 unit. It took Pebble 2 years to sold 1 million device.
