How to Break In A New or Rebuilt Engine – EricTheCarGuy

3. This is all good news. I have a 1999 Civic with a B16A2. It was just completely rebuilt with all new parts. This gives me a lot of knowledge about what to do and what not to do. There's been a lot of conflicting information I've heard from a lot of different sources. But this confirms what I thought in the first place.

4. Awful engine break-in advice. The first 50-100 miles is the most critical and the rings won’t seat any more after that. As long as the coolant and oil is up to temp, you do want to go high in the RPM and even wide-open throttle. The cylinder pressure will go behind the rings, force them against the bore, and make them seat faster.

   Diesel engines in a plant get assembled, go into a dyno cell and run at WOT, and only then receive certification and release to install. Same with automotive engines. Engine plans run the engine WOT before it leaves.

   ‘Easy’ break-in is just a recipe for life-long oil consumption.

5. No mention of what type of oil to break in with, which is the most important part of breaking in a newly rebuilt or remanufactured engine. Useless info.

6. Eric rebuild my engine but I crank the motor and it only cranks 3 times and then it stops, I can only hear it click 3 on the starter

8. Ok, you sound like a good mechanic. But, do you eat with those gloves on? One of the most aggravating things I come across is a mechanic getting in a customer’s with no covers on the seats and filthy hands all over the place. Those gloves are disposable and cheep. You must be even operating your camera with them on. Very unprofessional. Otherwise a very informative video.

9. what if after you fully rebuilt your engine from con rods, pistons, bearings, valve, lifters, cams.. etc. etc. and you run with a bigger turbo and injectors with it.. my question is it safe to break in the engine without damaging the engine with fuel and air ratio?

30. I've got a Honda Accord 2.4 Liter 4 Cylinder. I've beaten the living daylights out of that engine from the time I took it off the lot, and I don't religiously follow the owners manual recommendations for service intervals either, in fact sometimes I go 20,000 miles without changing the oil. 235K miles later, she runs beautifully with no issues. In fact when she idles you can hardly hear her running.

31. Make sure U clean the intake manifold when u install a rebuilt motor also u wanna rev it right away after u got oil pressure at different speeds u don’t wanna just let it idle the rings and cam won’t wear in properly

38. I know this is an old vid so I'm hoping you can answer my question. I've got a rebuilt I6 4.0 engine in my 96 jgc and the instructions I got for this is to leave the oil filter open ¹/⁸" loose and use a drill and turn the pump through the distributor hole till oil comes out the filter hole,tighten filter and that's it. Does this sound kosher or should I do more? Too much pressure builds with the filter tight, made 1/2 drill smoke.

39. can I turn the crank by hand to prime the engine?I was thinking about putting a rachet on the crank nut and turn this by hand with no plugs in would thise also help get oil flowing before I start the cranking process for extra protection?

42. It's a misconception that piston rings 'break in'.. Rings don't break in, the crosshatch in the bore does. The new crosshatch in the cylinder has peaks and valleys. The purpose of the break in period is for the rings to cut into the peaks in the crosshatch which stick out of the oil film causing metal to metal contact with the rings, and leave the valleys that are necessary to maintain the oil film layer. Rings hydroplane across the thin layer of oil in the cylinders except for the bottom and top of the stroke where they come to a stop because you can't have hydroplaning where there is no movement. The ideal break in is using a good break in oil and actually running the engine harder to cause the wear on the peaks to take place as soon as possible otherwise glazing can take place in the bores.
