Belt squeal, squeaky belt, or belt noise? Learn how to quiet a squeaky belt in your car.
I show you how to temporarily quiet the belt using WD40 so that you can drive to the parts store without the annoying squeal. The serpentine belt in your car powers the accessories such as air conditioning, power steering, the alternator, fan, and waterpump. There are three types of serpentine belt wear, pilling, glazing, and abrasion. Pulley wear will cause your pulley to squeak. A worn out pulley bearing or a worn spring in the tension pulley can also cause squeaking.

Just a quick bit of information, I personally wouldn't recommend using WD40 or any amount of lubricant on a serpentine belt because the belt needs tension to function correctly. If you lubricate the belt, yes, it will stop the squeak, but it will not only cover up the problem instead of fixing it, it may lead to a larger problem (belt may slip off).
Anyways, to each is their own, if you REALLY want to fix a squeak go for it. Just be careful 🙂
A belt transfers power through friction. If friction is reduced, power transmission is also reduced. This can cause overheating (slow water pump or fan), insufficient AC, insufficient charging or electrical power, loss of power steering.
A belt makes noise when misaligned or slipping.
Lubrication just causes the slipping to increase and usually drives any noise up in frequency so we don't hear it. Lubrication is counterproductive in any belt type friction drive. Belt dressings are usually either an adhesive formula to increase friction temporarily or a lubricant. Neither one fixes the problem and usually end up making a mess to be cleaned up.
If I’m not mistaken, this is THE shortest vid you have ever uploaded. Way to go..!ðŸ‘ÂÂ
WD40 helps to remove moisture from metal. However, the rubber compounds in the belt can be damaged by WD40. It may quiet the noise temporarily, or make it worse. It can also damage bearings, wiring, and other engine components.
Don’t spray the belt. It can slip off and do damage. Instead change the belt.
Wd 40 made it squeal worse! What next? Got appt to change belt in a week but wanna get rid of squeal!
Soap does the same thing without the damage you may cause to your pulleys
Wd40 breaks down rubber just so you know
That is not ok to do there's always a reason for the squeal by putting wd-40 on the belt could cause belt slip and could lead to the power steering to not function properly and alternator not charging the battery properly.
WD-40 can cause belts to corrode. If you are gonna replace belt soon ok but I wouldn't use this to "fix" it
My belt started squeaking MORE after I did this?!
Chris I have the same Mazda b3000 with ac what is the gator back belt number you used?
That’s a thunderbird? But the Engine is front wheel drive I think?
I try to remember to spray my belts twice a year. Keeps them from drying out. I have never had to change a belt.
I have a Kia Rio 5 that needs a new power steering belt but I'm used to working on a Dodge that I used to have and you can basically sit down right next to the motor in a Dodge ram lol with this little rice burner I got they don't give you any room you damn near have to take the whole car apart just to change the belt
Between you and my pops I can fix any car issue. Keep up the great work.
Oily liquids damages to the belt. The best you can use silicone based spray.
I would like to ask if this removes leaked power steering fluid from the drive belt ??? My compressor drive belt squeaks due to contamination by leaked power steering fluid. I have already fixed that leak. But there's a handful of fluid left on the belt and pulley, and it's still noisy. I'd like to know if wd 40 would solve that permanently, and hopefully remove all the fluid left in there???
Just curious how this would quiet the noise if the cause is the pulley?
can you put wd40 at an alternator please ????
Hey chris my belt start squealing immediately after i washed my engine with simple green….did i not rinse it well enough or did the simple green dry the belt out?
😃😃😃😃
my 4 pk 1210 serpentine belt was squeaking at some point. The mechanics said it was normal. And I had it replaced by a friend who is a mechanic and it stopped squeaking. I use a product named belt conditionner by abro. Now and then.
Can you use PB BLASTER?
I sprayed WD40 on my Ex misses, and she went away 🤪ðŸ¤â€Ââ‰ï¸ÂÂ😂🤣
Don’t listen to this guy! Wd 40 will slip. .
That’s not a proper advice. Wd40 contains oil which is harmful to rubber elements. I thought everyone knows that…..,
Thank you
use 303 to sling all the debris out of the pulleys and the belt. it's a true permanent fix
WD-40 makes the noise worse because it adds the slippery. Any kinds of Rubber treatment liquids are working.
This fucked my belt, it stopped the squeak for a day and the next day it’s spastically flipping around
WD-40 is the only essential oil I trust
Made my shit 10 times worse
Is WD-40 safe on rubber?
Can I use a silicone spay instead of WD40
