Thrust bearings are not something that you normally have a problem with in fact if you do it will most likely be on a vehicle with a manual transmission but it’s good to know what they do and what happens if there’s a problem with them. I made this video to cover what thrust bearings are and what their function is inside the engine and a little about what happens when they go bad, I hope you find this information helpful should you experience any of the symptoms covered in the video.

Wish we had more mechanics and motorhead like him. N yea good ol' crank walk sux!
In my brief experience worn out thrust bearings means a catastrophic loss of oil pressure.
My 94 Honda prelude starts up but when it warms up and I push in the clutch to shift it shuts off and I was told it was the thrust bearings so I have to take the engine apart and fix it just don’t know which ones fit
I have a question would bad thrust bearing cause thumping when engaging into each gear, feel it most in 1st and 2nd? I have new clutch, innovative mounts and poly suspension bushings lmk thanks
I always thought thrust bearings had physical ball bearings within them. I thought these u are talking about are thrust washers. Since theres no physical bearings there more like shims
Thank you! My goodness this was a crystal clean explanation that really helped me
Laterally? I think you mean axially, actually.
Best mechanic videos on YouTube!
Thanks bro. Practicing for my ASE P2 test and didn't know what theses were or what they did. Loved that you also explained the diagnose on it.
What about automatic I think this may be the culprit for my sensor going out it's happened twice already maybe a bad sensor I dont know any tips on how to check it
My mechanic just said the my crank shaft moves back and forth. How big or how far does it move? And how bad is the situation? He did say that the trust bearings needs to be replaced.
I had no idea what that metal bit was, but this video cleared that right up. One of these bearings wore down a groove in the main bearing cap and then dislodged to the point it seized my engine. I'm stubborn AF, and I like to fix things so I took the whole engine apart to find that. Daily driver, oil level was good, recently changed…
Can worn thrust bearings in my 98 Safari van be the cause of my serpentine belt continually being spoiled and squeaking and having to be replaced?
Thanks
GUYS
DO YOU THINK IT CAN MAKE MY ENGINE STALL WHEN I CLUTCH ?
BECAUSE I HAVE A BIG PLAY WHEN I CLUTCH ON MY CRANKSHAFT HELP PLZ
Are there any video's for installing this plate?
I would imagine that the extra slop in the rotating assembly would cause a lot more damaging harmonics/vibrations as well? Could damage the block and crank eventually I would imagine. Particularly in a high RPM application
Quick question does this mean the engine is shot when I find my thrust bearings in the pan it's a K24 off a element and its a manual do I have to replace the engine
Thanks your my favorite mechanic to watch very informative and professional thank you! Just subscribed
I wish Eric was my big brother
??? How likely is this to cause a a front crank shaft seal leak ???
Didn't really understand what Flying Miata was talking about in the description for their clutch switch override until just now. Thank you for your service!
thrust bearings on my ford 302 are so bad i had to offset the serpentine belt 1 tooth to make it stop squealing.
Can I do it in the car or do I have to pull put the engine eric the car guy
Do you need to replace
and googles first recomendations this?!?
Thanks, Eric. Excellent video as usual. Hits it out of the park every time!
Impeach yourself, ad guy!
1:20 FBI open up.
Engine might have cleaned first, very bad camera angles and lighting.
Can you have thrust position in all positions?
Damn sucker…you was looking young…ha…the original OG YouTube mechanic

What design changes have been incorporated into engine design to beaf up the added thrust bearing demand and lack of lubrication to the bearings since the mandatory clutch engagement was mandated for engine start-up? Also, what's the average life expectancy of thrust bearings since that mandate was imposed and how does it compare to the previous design?
Then why prepare thrust washer/bearings with a softer material and risk the lateral wear and lateral movement of the crankshaft ? Why not use a high end alloy for thrust bearing?
Which side does the thrust washer channels go then??
Amazing man … thanks
Thanks for the lesson.
No crank no start on a manual transmission, where you're forced to press the clutch for start, then just bypass the switch on the clutch pedal, it's only two wires.. If it cranks over then there's your problem, a binding crank. However, I've personally never encountered this problem before, not saying it can't happen I've just never seen it.
if i found one in thrust bearing in oil pan on the other is still in block can i fit them back in when rebuilding and it will be ok
great mullet!!!
i have a triumph stag v 8 its noking taken engine out their is movemeanth side to side and found tiny piece metal in sump could big end shells b ok and would thrust bearings cause a nock
Good explanation!
is it possible to remove these with the engine still on the car and without removing the pistons , thanks any help is greatly appreciated
Thanks, man! ðŸ‘ÂÂðŸÂ»🇺🇸
A manual clutch has it's own thrust bearing so don't confuse it with the crankshaft thrust bearing
